			<p align="left">With today's loss of Donna Summer music lost yet
			another bright star. Her influence on the world of dance was large
			because not only did she appeal to the disco crowd but her musical
			influence ushered in a whole new way of dancing to the rest of the
			world changing it forever.<br>
			<br>
			She had that crossover appeal many artists can only dream of having.
			Her version of the song &quot;<a target="_blank" href="http://youtu.be/V5AztWseIdU">Love
			To Love You Baby</a>&quot; had a sensual sound to it that even the people
			who claimed to hate disco loved is a prime example of her appeal to
			more than the perceived niche she was associated with.<br>

			Long time DJ Steve Breeze Brewer said in a post in the Steppers
			Music Group; &quot;May you R.I.P. she helped usher a new style of music

		urban contemporary listeners, <b>Freddie Jackson</b> was one of the
		biggest stars of the latter half of the '80s, dominating the R&amp;B charts
		seemingly at will. Jackson's forte was sophisticated, romantic soul
		ballads aimed at adult audiences, but he was also capable of tackling
		urban contemporary dance fare and even the occasional jazz tune.
			</p>
			<p align="left">
		Yet unlike many of his peers <b>
		<a target="_top" href="http://goo.gl/k8PjA">Luther Vandross</a>,
		<a target="_top" href="http://goo.gl/rEOdO">Anita Baker</a>, Peabo
		Bryson</b>, etc. Jackson never managed to cross over to the pop charts,
		where none of his R&amp;B smashes even breached the Top Ten. As new trends
		like hip-hop altered the urban contemporary landscape, Jackson gradually
		faded from view during the '90s.<br>
		<br>
		Jackson was born October 2, 1956, in Harlem, and like so many soul
		stars, he was trained as a gospel singer from an early age, singing at
		the White Rock Baptist Church. There he met Paul Laurence, who would
		later become his producer and songwriting partner. After completing
		school, Jackson joined Laurence's group <b>LJE</b> (<i>Laurence-Jones
		Ensemble</i>) and played the New York club scene. During the early '80s,
		Jackson moved to the West Coast and sang lead with the R&amp;B band <b>
		Mystic Merlin</b>, but soon returned to New York to work with Laurence
		at the Hush Productions company. He sang on demo recordings of
		Laurence's compositions, and also served as a backup singer for <b>
		<a href="http://www.steppersusa.com/News/2012/5/5-16-2012-sotd.php">Melba Moore</a></b> after she caught his
		nightclub act.

		<img border="0" src="http://www.steppersusa.com/images/2012-news/5-16-2012-sotd.png" width="400" align="left">There
		were early signs that <b>Melba Moore</b> would become an entertainer.
		The most obvious motivation was her mother, <b>Bonnie Davis</b>, who was
		also a successful singer.
			</p>
			<p align="left">
		Witnessing the success that her mother endured, Moore knew
		the entertainment industry would not escape her. The world of performing
		arts was formally introduced to her by way of dance lessons at the age
		of four. Moore's mother impressed upon her that "if you don't touch
		people's hearts, it doesn't mean anything." Her stepfather would also
		become an instrumental figure in the development of her early career.<br>
		<br>
		All her siblings were musically inclined. Melba's interest was dance.
		However, her stepfather insisted that she learn the piano. Against her
		will, she conceded and to her benefit. She gained much admiration for
		the blues and jazz pianists. Upon graduating from college, she became a
		music teacher, which she found very fulfilling. Nonetheless, Moore's
		affinity for the entertainment industry persisted.

		<span style="font-size: 14pt">You want elimination rounds... Here's How!<br>
&nbsp;<b><font size="4">#steppersbeatcolumn</font></b></span></p>
			<align="left">
			<p align="left">Yesterday Pete Frazier told me a secret that
			everyone probably already knew (if they have been paying attention)
			about when it comes to eliminations in the semi-final rounds of the
			WLSC.<br>
			<br>
			Eliminations are contingent on ticket sales. Wow! That was simple
			now wasn't it? Let me explain it to you. If he can sell out the VIP
			tickets he said he will start doing elimination rounds. Simply said,
			if the VIP tickets aren't sold out by the Chicago semi-finals he
			won't be able to do elimination rounds.<br>
			<br>
			To make it even simpler to understand for those reading this that
			may not be business minded; he has to make the money to make the
			contest work the way we want it to work. They don't have major
			sponsorship like the contest had in the early '90's to pay the
			expenses and a gigantic purse. It takes money to put it all together
			so if you want to procrastinate and wait for the last minute to buy
			the tickets expect a show instead of the contest you've been
			clamoring for.<br>
			<br>
			I fully understand as a businessman the need for having the funding
			ahead of time. Of course I also understand the point of view of the
			steppers enthusiast who wants to see a contest that lives up to it's
			name. Yea, it seems like a high pressure move but since people
			always go to the event why not 'call his bluff' buy the tickets
			sooner than later and hold him to his word. This way everyone is
			happy.<br>
			<br>
			Over the next day or so I will be completing the Majestic Gents
			website which will include the seating chart and the facility to buy
			those tickets online right from the site. There will be an
			announcement when you can view the chart and make your purchases.<align="left">&nbsp;<align="left"><font size="3">&nbsp;</font><b><font style="font-size: 13pt"><a target="_top" href="http://goo.gl/jkd0x">Continued</a></font><font size="3" style="font-size: 14pt">

		notice, it did bring them to the attention of producer/arranger Thom
		Bell who signed the band to his soon-to-be influential soul label Philly
		Groove. Right from the start this was a perfect match as the band
		released the classic "<b>La La Means I Love You</b>" in 1968, a song
		that began a string of hits lasting into the mid-'70s.

			<p align="left">It's truly about the footwork. If there's one thing

			<align="left">
			<p align="left">Happy mothers day! This column is based and mostly
			from a column I wrote in 2009. Its funny how things change but stay
			the same isn't it? <br>
			<br>
			For about the 10th time from the 10th person I've heard the term
			'mainstream steppers' used inappropriately when these people
			referred to a subset of the steppers community. This behavior is
			obviously scripted and planned with a purpose in mind.<br>
			<br>
			Perhaps the group of people perpetuating this myth should be called
			the 'cool kids' as I mentioned in the column below. There is a
			message buried in these words and it's up to you as the reader to
			put two and two together.<br>
			<br>
			So what outweighs "for the sake of the dance" in the steppers
			community? What situations arise that should give the dance a "back
			burner" placement for Chicago style steppers? Throughout the years
			I've heard the phrase bandied about more times than I care to
			recall. <br>
			<br>
			Individuals would say "this shouldn't be done (or said)" because it
			wouldn't (or would) be in the best interest of the dance. If one
			group has more influence over all the other groups in the community,
			is it good for the sake of the dance or are we loosing something as
			a result of that much power? <br>
			<br>
			At times the "social hierarchy" in the Chicago steppers community
			reminds me of those wonderful days in high school where you got
			classified into some social group. There are groups (in high school)
			"everyone" wants to belong to or be associated with because it makes
			us "look cool" and has certain "advantages".

			<p align="left">It wasn't a particularly long run but it was a fun
			ride for the most part. Last night I spoke to Paul, the owner of
			Club Dyamonds and he told me the pending sale of the club would be
			complete by the end of the month.<br>
			<br>
			He also said the new owner has said they were planning on taking the
			club in a 'different direction' which means the small spot in
			Lynwood will no longer have stepping on Friday nights. <br>
			<br>
			During the birthday celebration (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.steppersusa.com/steppers-photos.php">see
			the photos</a>) Marquita informed the crowd that
			their next set (4th Friday) would be their last at Club Dyamonds.
			She told me earlier that evening they are exploring other locations
			(they were informed officially on Monday) and would inform me as
			soon as they have a deal set up.<br>
			<br>
			Since I'm scheduled to be in St. Louis at Stepaganza when they have
			their final set; it means last night was my final night taking
			photos at the Lynwood club which used to go under the name Club
			Moet.<br>
			<br>
			More than anything else, it was the economy to blame since according
			to the owner, sales have been down over the last year across the
			board so this one can't be blamed on the steppers. Personally I feel
			it was a bit more complicated than that but I'll keep that to

		general public. With a diverse music style that is often confused with
		<b>Babyface</b>, <b>Tony Rich</b> mixes elements of jazz, rock and soul
		into his tracks.<br>
		<br>
		<b>Tony Rich</b> got his start in the music industry as a staff writer
		at LaFace Records. While there, Rich penned hits for <b>Boyz II Men</b>,
		<b>Johnny Gill</b>, <b>TLC</b> and <b>Toni Braxton</b>.<br>
		<br>
		While living in Detroit, <b>Tony Rich Project</b> started playing in
		jazz fusion and soul bands and worked with local Detroit songwriters. It
		was at this time that <b>John Salley</b>, Detroit Pistons player and
		record producer, encouraged Rich to work with his artists and to even
		make his own tracks.

		truth...<br>
&nbsp;<b><font size="4">#steppersbeatcolumn</font></b></span></p>
			<align="left">
			<p align="left">Is it fear of drama or just plain fear? I think I've
			heard just about every instructor make this claim and I think I've
			heard about 5,000 steppers say it... but really isn't it time people
			<i>came clean</i> and told the truth? They say, '<i>the truth will
			set you free</i>' so why don't steppers tell the truth on issues
			that are important to them?<br>
			<br>
			We talk about gaining positive traction for the sake of the dance
			but we constantly leave out the most important questions and never
			seek the real answers which cause confusion. Are we being dishonest with ourselves (<i>and
			each other</i>)? Need some examples? OK, here is one to start
			with...<br>
			<br>
			We <i>hear</i> about instructors that don't know their stuff all the
			time <b>why don't we ever name names?</b> What's up with that? If we
			go to a merchant and they rip us off we're all over Facebook telling
			the whole world not to go to that store. Social media has enabled us
			in that way. <br>
			<br>
			We seem to be getting close to doing exactly that about the parties,
			sets, and weekend events when we aren't happy with some aspect or
			for that matter (<i>any part of the function</i>). At the very least
			this gives the '<i>alleged</i>' offender an opportunity to defend
			themselves or to correct the misdeed (<i>or in the case of a poor
			instructor a wake-up call</i>).<br>
			<br>
			I'm <b><i>not</i></b> suggesting an all out war against anyone but
			I've heard allegations but <i>actual names are <b>never</b> attached</i>.
			The attacks are made in a '<i>whispering campaign</i>' style which
			IS <i>nothing more than drama</i>. This type of drama has led to a
			reputation that has tarnished the community. And we know it!<br>
			<br>
			Taking the allegations out in the open would set a precedent that '<b><i>we're
			not taking it anymore</i></b>' and could be a major step in changing
			the behavior of '<i>offenders</i>' in the community. This tact would
			be a direct assault on '<i>steppers drama'</i> caused by these '<i>whispering
			campaigns</i>' by bringing the issues into the light (<i>we all know
			what roaches do when the light gets turned on</i>).<align="left">

			People seem to think sets, events and parties (they're all the

			<br>
			Unless you've got a real good hook-up at that club or banquet hall

			<br>
			For the size room you're going to need you need to have between

			you actually get the room. Now, there are folks who have that kind

			When putting events on the list I've decided it's time to draw the
			line in the sand; to make the distinction between genuine 'pure'
			steppers sets and those that are not. SteppersUSA is designed to
			promote the growth of stepping and not any other form of dance.<br>
			<br>
			Since this is SteppersUSA I feel it's important to make the
			distinction since I've been hearing increasing complaints from
			steppers that some parties are 'selling themselves' as steppers

			which are not true to our dance.<br>
			<br>
			The last thing we want is confusion about what a stepping party is
			so that is exactly what this move is designed to address. I'm sure
			when I don't detect one you'll be quick to let me know when they are
			not doing a pure steppers party and polluting it with other dances.

			<p align="left">There is so much contention between different groups
			of steppers about what stepping music is, what count to step to,
			even if the count(s) should be used at all. I've been in the middle
			of and reporting on these things for quite a while so people kind of
			know what my opinions are (at least until I change my mind).<br>
			<br>
			I try to do as much as I can to be a bridge between the 'new' and
			the 'now' and the 'then' and attempt to be honest and critical (as
			in critical thinking) in my approach to the things I see, read and
			hear about in the steppers community.<br>
			<br>
			Sometimes I am good about how well I can point out something I see,
			while at others, I fail miserably. I chalk it up to being human.
			Earlier today I was reading an article which wasn't related to
			stepping but the effects of what the article was suggesting has
			everything to do with our dance.<br>
			<br>
			I was reading about the challenges radio programmers and music
			directors have faced through the years when it came to the 'oldies
			music format' the thing that struck me wasn't the fact that time
			goes on and music tends to go out of style I know that and this
			column isn't about music today. When the author mentioned some of
			the programmers and music directors weren't even born when much of
			the music they were programming was popular and wouldn't know one of
			those songs if they heard them (the truth of the statement froze me in my tracks).<br>
			<br>
			If you don't know how a move in the dance looked when it was done
			(in an era before everyone was videotaping/recording the dance) how
			can you be teaching it? If you weren't there or didn't get co-signed
			by people who were actually there (and can prove it) how do you know
			you're stepping?<align="left"><font size="3">&nbsp;</font><b><font style="font-size: 13pt"><a target="_top" href="http://goo.gl/pyX4s">Continued</a></font><font size="3" style="font-size: 14pt">

		Judged merely by his records alone, the man's legacy is enormous. As the

		But <b>Curtis Mayfield</b> wasn't just a singer. He wrote most of his

			<align="left">
			<p align="left">Last night I enjoyed a couple of hours at a birthday
			party at a south side club on Cottage Grove. </p>
			<p align="left">It's a local corner bar (many would call the place a
			hole in the wall bar) where the majority of the focus of the place
			was on the bar not the dance floor.<br>
			<br>
			There is a small dance floor area and a DJ booth along with a half
			dozen tables or so, a darts area... if you've been at a corner bar
			you probably know the kind of place. When I walked into the place
			the DJ was playing a classic steppers cut and there was a couple on
			the floor dancing... not stepping... dancing.<br>
			<br>
			The DJ mixed in a few more classics and a couple from our group hit
			the floor and stepped alongside the other dancing couple. That
			lasted for a couple songs until another group of people came in who
			weren't stepping or dancing... they were jukin. <br>
			<br>
			Now the DJ wasn't blind so he adjusted the music to the majority of
			the crowd and pretty soon he was mixing house music and the floor
			was filled to the point they were jukin in the passage ways between
			tables. This went on for several songs and then The DJ slowed down
			back to steppers music (again, tried and true classics) those who
			still had the energy continued to juke and one or two couples
			danced... not stepped... danced.<br>
			<br>
			My point is everyone in Chicago knows how to step and many more than
			we are led to believe know about the dance we call stepping or
			steppin. The fact is just like most of the country if you were to
			ask the couples that were dancing (not stepping as we know it) they
			would say they were stepping. <br>
			<br>
			We as 'stepping enthusiasts' have done a very limited... if not poor
			job of educating the masses about the dance as we know it. Those who
			are most engaged are busy preaching to the converted by only
			promoting to existing steppers. What we end up getting are people
			who are pre-disposed to our dance through some coincidental
			exposure.<align="left"><font size="3">&nbsp;</font><b><font style="font-size: 13pt"><a target="_top" href="http://goo.gl/i10hi">Continued</a></font><font size="3" style="font-size: 14pt">

			<align="left">
			<p align="left">Today's column is a re-do of a column I did last
			year because it seems (to me) to be very relevant as we prepare for
			the contest season and all of the summer events.
			</p>
			<p align="left">Some steppers want
			that 'perfect dance' with an accomplished dancer and don't seem to
			want to settle for anything less.<br>
			<br>
			Sometimes we get so serious about the dance; we forget why the
			majority of steppers step. People want to be able to have fun and
			relax and unwind. It seems the people who are having the most fun
			are those who let go and enjoy their time on the floor.<br>
			<br>
			That's just an observation but it's not a coincidence. When I watch
			a contest (the exact opposite of a casual atmosphere for the dancer)
			it inevitably seems the people who are truly getting into the music,
			the atmosphere and dancing with their partner are always the most
			enjoyable to watch.<br>
			<br>
			There seems to be a constant battle in the steppers community for
			the "hearts and souls" of those who dance and it is a tug of war
			between precision (working at perfecting ones dance) and being able
			to "just dance and enjoy oneself." It's pretty easy to identify a
			person going through this struggle on the dance floor.<br>
			<br>
			Their body language always gives them away. Some are stiff and
			robotic in their movement, while others show it on their faces.
			These individuals are not having fun! To really have fun there isn't
			a standard, or requirement or a count method to adhere to. It's the
			exact opposite you just let go and enjoy the moment.<align="left"><font size="3">&nbsp;</font><b><font style="font-size: 13pt"><a target="_top" href="http://goo.gl/QxaK8">Continued</a></font><font size="3" style="font-size: 14pt">

			<p align="left">With all of the recent pain it appears many of the

			We've all heard or participated in workshops where people claim they

			that's unacceptable. We have instructors who teach beyond the basics
			and should only accept those who want to learn something more than
			how to count.<br>
			<br>
			At the moment the Workshops section is off-line as I re-work it to
			something which should be of value to the community. Since larger
			events have workshops rolled into their event schedule I'm going to
			gear the section to people who can benefit from the proliferation of
			beginner's workshops the most. The people interested in learning the
			dance for the first time.<br>
			<br>
			I'm not going to list the workshops at this point because it seems a
			futile endeavor to get instructors to send info on their workshops
			so instead what I am going to do is create a list of instructors who
			do beginners workshops for people to contact.<align="left"><font size="3">&nbsp;</font><b><font style="font-size: 13pt"><a target="_top" href="http://goo.gl/bxEPO">Continued</a></font><font size="3" style="font-size: 14pt">

		the late '60s, <b>Deniece Williams</b> was a candy striper in a Chicago

		Her favorites were <b>Carmen McRae</b> for her diction and <b>
		<a target="_blank" href="http://goo.gl/XqRNM">Nancy Wilson</a></b>, who,
		for Williams, exemplified class and elegance. However, her mother, also

		In need of employment and with college on the back burner, the fledgling
		singer was introduced to Wonder by John Harris, her cousin from Detroit,
		who happened to be on tour as a valet for Wonder (and was also his
		childhood friend). Her cousin arranged for Williams to meet Wonder
		backstage at a concert. Six months later, the gifted vocalist was flown
		into Detroit by Wonder for an audition. Among the 26 who auditioned,
		Williams, who sang "<b>Teach Me Tonight</b>," was only one of three who
		was hired by Wonder. The three became known as <b>Wonderlove</b>.&nbsp;

			<p align="left">We know how important it is for the DJ at the club
			to play the right combination of music to get people to the dance
			floor. A wrong decision can clear the floor and a series of wrong
			decisions can clear out a club.<br>
			<br>
			Steppers have a fairly well defined group of songs they will step to
			which usually consists of a mix of a few standards and a few newer
			songs and as long as the DJ has a working knowledge of those songs
			they can create a playlist to work from.<br>
			<br>
			Finding and introducing new songs or re-introducing an older song
			which may have dropped off the radar can be a challenge for a DJ who
			wants to keep it moving on the dance floor without clearing the
			floor with the wrong choice. The dedicated DJ will spend hours and
			hours listening to music before even adding songs to their
			collection and when they do they classify the song and put it in its
			place with the other music. That alone doesn't mean a song will be
			played at a set or event because there are so many variables

		<span style="font-size: 14pt">Taking inspiration and using it.<br>
&nbsp;<b><font size="4">#steppersbeatcolumn</font></b></span></p>
			<align="left">
			<p align="left">Once again inspiration strikes when seeing something
			completely different from the vision. This morning I saw a piece on
			one of the morning shows about what are being called 'Cash Mobs'
			which is a spinoff from the original 'flash mobs'.<br>
			<br>
			Like a 'flash mob', a 'cash mob' comes together on social media...
			in this instance people are prompted to come together at a targeted
			small business where each 'mobber' comes with $20 to spend at that
			business. It's been quite successful and has spread to many cities
			in the recent past.<br>
			<br>
			So, here is the idea I have. There are a lot of struggling steppers
			sets and parties throughout the country that could use help in the
			same fashion. What would happen if steppers banded together on
			Facebook and decided to have a 'steppers mob' where they would 'mob'
			a selected steppers set?<br>
			<br>
			Since steppers are prolific in the sense they will go stepping at
			the drop of a hat this could be done weekly in larger steppers
			communities where several events happen on the same day. In smaller
			communities where there may be only a couple of sets it could be
			done monthly while alternating between sets.</p>
			<p align="left">Let's look at how people band together for flash
			mobs or the latest iteration 'cash mobs' They usually have a group
			of like-minded people (we've got that covered).<br>
			<br>
			They discuss how to flash mob i.e., what song or dance or whatever
			(we have that covered we step). They discuss where to flash mob. We
			haven't yet and it would be a good idea to 'scout' locations first
			i.e., talk to DJ's make sure when they use the term steppers they
			aren't talking about a line dancer set.<align="left"><font size="3">&nbsp;</font><b><font style="font-size: 13pt"><a target="_top" href="http://goo.gl/TEsnd">Continued</a></font><font size="3" style="font-size: 14pt">

			<p align="left">For the first time since I can remember in recent
			history gas prices are actually lower than the previous year going
			into May. The question is how does it bode for the Memorial Day
			holiday events this year? Will we see an uptick attendance as a
			result? <br>
			<br>
			The magical early bird specials are about to evaporate for those
			events on May 1st so it's a good idea to plan ahead to maximize the
			savings. Tick Tick Tick... Get the word of mouth going fast to share
			in the savings!<br>
			<br>
			In the
			<a target="_blank" href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/steppers.music/">
			Steppers Music Facebook Group</a> we've decided to add a new wrinkle
			to the discourse on the board. We realize DJ's don't always see (or
			hear) music the same way steppers do. But we do realize the DJ is
			the person who usually hears the songs first (in the real world) and
			makes the decision to play it or not for the steppers.<br>
			<br>
			So we're adding to the question we ask on every song so it's
			essentially two questions for two different groups of people in the
			group. Each can learn from the other as a result. So we ask;
			steppers would you step to this or step away? And we also ask DJ's
			would you play this at your sets?<align="left"><font size="3">&nbsp;</font><b><font style="font-size: 13pt"><a target="_top" href="http://goo.gl/HyLcM">Continued</a></font><font size="3" style="font-size: 14pt">

		also the evolution of rap.<br>

		Hayes was born on August 20, 1942, in Covington, TN; his parents died
		during his infancy, and he was raised by his grandparents. After making
		his public debut singing in church at the age of five, he taught himself
		piano, organ, and saxophone before moving to Memphis to perform on the
		city's club circuit in a series of short-lived groups like <b>Sir Isaac
		and the Doo-Dads</b>, the <b>Teen Tones</b>, and <b>Sir Calvin and His
		Swinging Cats</b>. In 1962, he began his recording career, cutting sides
		for a variety of local labels.&nbsp;

		Stansfield</b> (born Lisa Jane Stansfield, 11 April 1966, Heywood,
		Lancashire, England) is a English pop singer-songwriter.</p>
			<p align="left">
		She attended Redbrook School, Rochdale and her first
		television appearance was on a talent programme in the Granada TV area
		in 1982. She won it singing The Human League track "<b>The Things That
		Dreams Are Made Of</b>". The series was produced by the then Head of
		Light Entertainment at Granada TV, Johnny Hamp.<br>
		<br>
		After releasing several unsuccessful singles in her mid-teens, she
		co-hosted a Children's TV pop show, <b>Razzmatazz</b> with <b>Alistair
		Pirrie</b>; additionally, Stansfield could be seen in 1983 children's
		television series The <b>Krankies Klub</b>, alongside comedian <b>Jimmy
		Cricket</b> and pop rock band <b>Rocky Sharpe and the Replays</b>. She
		became a major international star, still keeping her thick Heywood-ian
		(Lancashire) accent; in reference to the latter and to her working class
		background. Shaun Ryder from Happy Mondays once said that Stansfield's
		family "makes mine look posh". There is a common misperception that <b>
		Lisa Stansfield</b> is related to the late <b>Gracie Fields</b> (whose
		real name was Grace Stansfield and who hailed from Rochdale). However,
		Stansfield does own a recording studio called Gracielands.&nbsp;

			<p align="left">Ah the joy of driving across the city has returned

			The added bonus was it was DJ Cross' birthday so I got to watch all

			Tonight I intend to go to Paradise Productions set at Mr. G's to get

			One thing I have to chuckle (to myself of course) about is how

		for the R&B hits "<b>Just to Be Close to You</b>," "<b>Easy</b>," and "<b>Brickhouse</b>,"

		The members of Commodores, all of whom attended Tuskegee Institute in
