Steppers History In The Making

Written by Markie Bee on June 23, 2015.

The history of the dance isn't about any single individual or group of individuals -- it has become much larger than that. It is no longer a dance that's exclusively done on the south, north or west sides of the city of Chicago. It has become a dance that is done by people from many cities and age groups who come from a variety of backgrounds.

I haven't been spending all my time in the steppers video group; it just seems that way but I have been upgrading the website of the Steppers History project. It's now a wiki project which means everyone can contribute.

In most cases all you have to do is sign up and you can add to the timeline, add your personal recollections, add pages about historical events and so on without having to fill out a form and wait for me to post it for you.

Of course there are some things that MAY be too hard to do, for example if you want to post a photo or a video and can't figure out how to do it then you just shoot off an email to me at webmaster@steppershistory.org and I'll be more than happy to help or post it for you.

I've been busy with so much other steppin' related work I've had a rough time keeping up with the history site so if you have something to add (from any era) please jump in and make your addition. The wiki works the same way as Wikipedia works. It depends on user generated content.

We need basic information as well as the source of the information for each entry. If you are the source of the information please state that in your posting. If you look through the timeline entries you will see events are also posted not as advertising of the events but the posts indicate significant information about the group like an anniversary for example.

There are several categories in the wiki (I'm sure they will be expanded on) including the timeline, personal recollections, competitions, videos, magazine articles and photos. There needs to be information added about movies and television program episodes that either mention or feature steppin' -- and you the stepper know that information and may have appeared in (for example the Love Jones movie) and need to share that information.

People say there's not enough information out about the history of the dance, well this site is all about the history of the dance so it can be used as a reference for those who want to know more. It's also a place you can share your legacy in the art form in a very public way by sharing your experiences with the dance. Remember the history is no longer just about Chicago. We need to include history from other cities too.

Others say the history isn't important to them... well, that's OK but I feel you can learn from others experiences and become a better dancer. I still remember the saying; those who ignore history are destined to repeat it. I don't know if that saying is completely applicable but I also remember the saying; sharing is caring... so please share!

SteppersUSA is  looking for people who can tell the story to the nation...
I'm looking for staff from Chicago, the East coast (Atlanta, Central Florida, North Carolina), the mid west beyond & including Chicago (Detroit), the west and  on the west coast (San Francisco/Oakland and Seattle). If you take photos -- that's great but it's not necessary (perhaps you know someone who takes photos at the set -- even with a camera phone) we are looking to keep the country informed about the world of steppin in your area.  Shoot me an email!
