Step With A Purpose

Written by Tony Branch on May 28, 2015.

Talking about race is never just black and white, but when it comes to health, one thing is crystal clear: Racial disparities exist and a variety of factors, including genetics, seem to play a role, black people are 3 times more likely than white people in this country to develop kidney disease, from the likes of diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease. All of which could lead to require dialysis.

So imagine our surprise to find out one of our own had developed issue with her kidneys, and then on top of that required dialysis, while she awaits a donor for a replacement. Michelle Mason aka DJ Butta is that person.

For those of you who may have been sleeping under a rock and by chance have never met Michelle, she’s the “fireplug” for Cleveland’s “Dancin’ Don’s and Diva’s”, they host two wildly popular Stepper Set’s every year with “The Blackout” & “Fishnets and Fedora’s”. She also morphed into a “smoothing voiced” alter ego as DJ Butta on Oh So Smooth Radio with her In The Mix show.

Throughout this ordeal, Michelle has remained on air, as well as giving updates, while educating us about minorities and kidney disease via social media. Her fight hasn’t gone unnoticed. My Brothers in steppin' (Columbus Keyz, Darryl Borne, DJ Paul, & DJ D-Real), and I (The Southern Ohio Steppers Association) have been moved by Michelle’s situation, and also inspired by her spirit to keep living her life, so much that we will host a fundraiser with ALL THE PROCEEDS OFF THE DOOR going to assist Michelle with any day to day expenses she incurs.

Make plans to help Michelle as well as Step with a purpose at Summer Madness at Cognacs Dayton 6504 N. Union Road, Clayton Ohio, and Saturday June 6, 2015. Doors open at 5pm, we step until 10pm. Cost of admission is $20 as well as Table RSVP’s call 937-270-1508. We have steppers from Detroit, Cleveland, Columbus, Cincy, Indianapolis, Louisville, and Chicago that will be in attendance for this special lady to donate and show their support for her daily fight.

If you are unable to make it to the Set, and still wish to donate, please do so at: gofundme.com/nax2i4 All in all, I'd have to give this set out of 10 out of 10. The originality, the music was on point, the venue had ample parking and was easy to find, the laid back, yet super fun atmosphere after this long winter was what the doctor ordered. Good work Aki, I'm looking forward to the 2nd Annual Columbus Rib Fest Weekend feat R&B artist Roszunn July 17-19. See you on "The Wood".

My steppin’ Brothers and I are excited and look forward to seeing everyone who will make this fantastic event with a purpose on the dance floor.

SteppersUSA is  looking for people who can tell the story to the nation...
I'm looking for staff from Chicago, the East coast (Atlanta, Central Florida, North Carolina), the mid west beyond & including Chicago (Detroit), the west and  on the west coast (San Francisco/Oakland and Seattle). If you take photos -- that's great but it's not necessary (perhaps you know someone who takes photos at the set -- even with a camera phone) we are looking to keep the country informed about the world of steppin in your area.  Shoot me an email!
