Steppers Song Of The Day] For The Night by Musiq Soulchild #stepperssongoftheday Philadelphia-born
Taalib Johnson, aka R&B artist Musiq (Soulchild), grew up the
oldest of nine children.
The son of a die-hard '70s soul music fan, Musiq performed at Philly
showcases like the Five Spot and Wilhemina's until his management team,
Mama's Boys (Jerome Hipps and Michael McArthur), brought
him to the attention of Def Jam Records.
Musiq's debut album, 2000's Aijuswanaseing, was recorded mostly
at Touch of Jazz Studios in Philadelphia. His first single, "Just
Friends (Sunny)," appeared on the soundtrack to Nutty Professor
II: The Klumps, and two years later, Musiq released his second
album, the spiritual and personal Juslisen, which debuted at
number one on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
The following year brought the widely acclaimed Soulstar, and
after moving to Atlantic, Musiq released Luvanmusiq, (2007),
OnMyRadio (2008), and MusiqintheMagiq (2011). While his
albums largely retained a laid-back, ballad-oriented sound, two of his
biggest hits "B.U.D.D.Y." and "Anything" were
uptempo club numbers that sampled disco hits from 1981 (Taana
Gardner's "Heartbeat" and Central Line's "Walking Into Sunshine,"
respectively).
He cites as his inspiration such icons as Stevie Wonder, James Brown,
Patti LaBelle, Billie Holiday, Sly & the Family Stone and Ray
Charles.
Musiq has also earned award nominations from Moard, BET, ASCAP, BMI, and
Soul Train. Musiq Soulchild has had 2 platinum albums, 2 gold albums and
7 hit singles. He has received awards from Billboard MTV, American Music
Awards, NAACP, and 11 Grammy nominations, including 3 for his 2007 album
Luvanmusiq. More Below
"There were people who knew of me but they didn't really know me; they
just knew me as 'that music dude.' So after getting that so much, I was
like 'Just call me Musiq.' It was so fresh to me because if I had to be
called anything, I would have wanted to be called Music.
That's how much I dug it; when you see me, I want you to automatically
think of music." The nickname Soulchild came from two ideas. Musiq
quotes it as, "Musiq Soulchild is technically two ideas. 'Musiq' is the
front man and 'Soulchild' is the idea behind it. It's basically me as an
artist in this generation, representing the traditions and the legacies
of the past soul stars."
In a recent interview with Singersroom, Musiq has announced the time has
come for him to focus more on writing and producing and working behind
the scenes.
"I think I want to take a step back a little bit as an artist," Musiq
confirmed. "I’m not going to stop performing or being an artist. I do
enjoy singing and all of that, but it takes away from being creative. At
least with being a writer-producer you can constantly create and make
music and things like that," says Musiq Soulchild.
On top of writing and producing for other acts, Musiq is writing his
first book. According to the publisher, DIP, the book will likely be in
stores Summer 2012.
Described as a book "about love and relationships and music," the
project is in development.
