I have some new music and some questions.  #steppersbeatcolumn

I really hate being stuck in one place for an extended period of time but when your car is broke... you don't generally go anywhere until it gets fixed and that's my case right now.

I've missed a set on Friday and I might just miss a set tonight and possibly Friday too. You do what you have to do to make it work and that's what I'm doing. It does cramp my style big time but it is what it is...

In the meantime, it's been a while since I've put up a song for you to decide if you would step to it or not so I'm bringing it back on the site today with a song from guitarist Lee Holloway. He sent me the song about a month and a half ago along with several others from some other artists so it makes sense to me to put the music out there for your consideration.

The track is from his new release CD titled "Midwest Stroll" and its name is "Take It Slow". You can hear it after the jump. Please tell me in the comments how you feel about the cut. Would you step to it?

Since I'm on the subject of music so heavily today... I'm glad so many of you like my 2012 Obama Mix. As the DJ's upload their versions of their own mixes I'll post them up for you as soon as I'm made aware of them.

This morning on Facebook poster Jt Steppin posted a few interesting questions one on a subject I've spoken about before. The use of large round tables at parties... here's what he said:

"TABLES, or JUST CHAIRS? I attend all kind of dances in a given year, and there is different between most (TABLES)Steppin Set , Ballroom, Hand Dance parties compared to your (CHAIRS ONLY) Salsa, Shagg and West Coast dances that you'll see lots of Tables at one , and the other you'll see chairs only( NO TABLES) lined up around the dance floor.

Tables: Big, Round, Blocking , 10 Chairs that most steppers line up anyway on one side of the table making it hard to get by. Blocking the aisles!

Chairs only: Plenty of room for larger dance floors. Able to dance any where at the party! No need to walk all all all the way back in back around tables just to ask a woman to dance!! She is Right there!!!! Right where you want her!!

What do you think?" I'd love to hear your comments.

The other post I saw interest in was this:

"MEGA Events! Is there really a need to have a BIG -A- Platform for the DJ? Come on son!!! Put the DJ over in the corner some where, and use that space for more dance floor room! What do you think?

Chicken or Egg?

I guess it's a case of priorities.  #steppersbeatcolumn

There was no master plan or extended agenda when people responsible for the dances existence took those first steps. They were folks just having fun.

Some were youngsters staying (for the most part) out of trouble in a dangerous time at a dangerous place. Some were older boppers who were into having fun with the dance. That was the common link... the fact people were having fun.

They gathered and socialized and interacted with each other and in many ways not really much different from what we se today at the regular steppers sets. Or was it? From what I've heard from some veteran dancers nobody obsessed over the dance the way steppers do today.

The dance itself was a byproduct of the social atmosphere where people got together to be get this... social. I sort of wonder when it all got turned around. I mean where the social interaction became the byproduct of the dance.

Think about it... nobody has gone around saying; "do it for the sake of the set." No we ask people do this or that for the sake of the dance because the byproduct became the product and the product (the social interaction between people) became the result.

Doesn't the "way of life" include the dance but also includes much more than the dance itself? We've heard the stories on how stepping has saved people from life on the streets at an important point of their lives. I know I've heard my share through the years.

When it comes down to it it's not just the dance it includes the dance and everything steppers do when at the dance. As was brought out in one of the recent posts on Facebook "one poster said they wished there was a notebook with all of the different terms steppers use so they could understand the conversation.
