I
put out the first issue of this newsletter 1055 issues ago in 2007
and today marks the first issue of volume 4. Most days over the last
three years I've had something to say about what I considered to be
a topical issue related to the Chicago style steppers community... I
made attempts to champion a few causes... and pushed for positive
change within the community while urging greater exposure to the
rest of the world.
I could do an annual review of some type and highlight events from
the newsletters past...
I could also go over changes from SteppersUSA's history from October
2004 to the present and perhaps I will in October when the site
reached that particular milestone.
Right now I feel the most important thing to talk about is next
Saturday's National Chicago Style Steppers Day. We started planning
this event back in February and put it in motion in March and as
time went on, the plan changed and adapted to what was happening in
the various cities across the country. Over the last couple of
months, I spent so much time on communicating with various
individuals who had interest but still weren't convinced this effort
would take hold (especially in Chicago) my face turned blue enough
to confuse me with a member of the Blue Man Group.

Some people I was counting on let me down but I don't hold a
grudge... because you know what? The National Chicago Style Steppers
Day will happen on Saturday all across the country. I want to thank
the many individuals who did commit time and money to make this
happen because it's the first and only nationally coordinated event
of its type ever to take place in this country.
The success of the event is that it's happening. The frosting on the
cake will be the number of people who participate locally and
nationally. This year's event will be great with or without support
from some circles. I've said from the beginning this day isn't about
steppers politics or the like... Simply put; if you love this dance,
you'll celebrate on August 14th. It presents (and represents) an
opportunity to share the dance, to mend fences, to open lines of
communication and to honor those who came before us, those who dance
today, and those who will dance tomorrow and beyond.
I've done everything I can to make this days organization as
transparent and open to every person who was willing to participate
and for the most part I think that was accomplished. I just wish at
times there were a few days with 40 or 50 hours in them but we're
limited to 24.
All of the events are available to everyone who can come in every
city. Many of us are making the event available as live streaming
video via Ustream.tv so even those who can't make it have the
opportunity to join in. It's a day to rejoice and a day history will
be made and I hope everyone that can... will join in.
