night I went to the monthly Paradise Production party at Mr. G's
where Rose Wellington just about always draws a capacity crowd
filling up both sides of the place. It seems like every time the
place (Mr. G's) hits capacity, the air conditioning can't keep up
with all of the of humanity working out on the dance floor. You
start feeling it at around 10pm and it seems to hit critical mass
within about an hour after that.
Rose is the quintessential party planner and hostess and many
steppers organizations would do well by watching and learning how
she makes her event work. You don't see Rose making a grand entrance
to her event a couple of hours into the event. Instead you see her
there long before the party starts doing much of the set-up herself
(even though she has plenty of able help who does do quite a bit
themselves) like any capable team leader. If there is something her
team missed along the way you can be sure Rose does catch it and
takes care of whatever needs to be done. She's been doing this party
forever and knows exactly what needs to be done.
It seems like the lady never sits down during her party she's always
greeting every person in the place with a warm thank you in every
conversation she has with you showing she genuinely appreciates your
choosing her party to come to.
Continued She does her share of gimmicks as the
evening progresses like her version of "let's make a deal" where she
gets a bunch of gift bags and tells the DJ to announce things like If
you have a Pace card or a CTA card show it to Rose and you'll get a
gift. When this happens it's like a feeding frenzy! People run up to her
from every direction to show her the card or whatever the DJ mentions to
try to get one of the gift bags.
Inside the gift bags the prizes range from small household items like a
charcoal lighter to a Tupperware container, to tickets for the next
party to some cash money prizes. I got a few shots of the frenzy of one
of her let's make a deal moments and you can see them in the photos
section of the site.
The DJ for the night was Mellow Khris and as a first... he actually made
it to the party before it actually started. Perhaps the stars were
aligned just right this night. Needless to say he cranked up the music
and people flocked to the dance floor and kept both sides packed all
night. Veteran radio personality Jim Raggs from Soul 106 made it up to
the DJ booth and V-103's Casper also stopped by as did "Step On It" TV
programs Deacon Doc. Cynthia Bean was on her station by the bar I shot a
photo of her, Rose, and Khris for her newsletter right after she got
there from Black Mary's set. WLSC Poll As you may remember I mentioned last
week I said I was going to run a WLSC related poll every week in the run
up to this years 20th worlds largest. I'll discuss last week's poll
result tomorrow but I'm starting a new poll today. This one has to do
with the Out of Town Category and where you stand on its existence. The
poll is just down the page so take a moment and let's see where the
steppers community stands on this question. (poll

When asked if there will be a
2011 National Chicago Style
Steppers Day Event, The short answer
is yes it will be an annual event
held on the weekend of the second Saturday in August. Overall, the event
was a smashing success in that we managed to pull the whole thing off.
Once we've had some time to digest and machinate what happened over the
weekend we will have a teleconference (probably after the WLSC) to
discuss what went right and what went wrong and to entertain ideas for
next year.
