Earlier
in the week Pete Frazier CEO of The
Majestic Gents said, "If you
qualified for the "Out of Town" category in the
World's Largest
Steppers Competition (WLSC), you're going to Chicago." Well, last
night he extended the statement to include the beginner's category.
As of Tuesday night, there were 15 participants in the beginner's
category.
"It's good to see new blood coming into the contest and I want
everyone to see all these new steppers show what they've got. I want
them to be able to show stepping to their friends and family."
He did say there were more changes to come... We will have to see
what's next. Tuesday was a wonderful display for the newest steppers
in the game and they stepped to a full house at Mr. G's. In a related note, Feo
and Candace withdrew from the competition. It's sad considering
right after last years competition they specifically told me
repeatedly they would be
right back the next year. I'll leave it alone because it's time to
spotlight others who will be participating and showing what they've
got.
There are two organizations in the Boston area that are celebrating
National Chicago Style Steppers Day (NCSSD). Even though I stopped
adding cities to the map of the United States because of multiple
events in some cities; and changes are happening at lightning speed.
Each group is invited to submit an article about their organization
and their involvement in the NCSSD event. This submission comes from
the Original Steppers of Boston.

Boston is home to approximately 80 active steppers in our group. Some of
us were fortunate enough to learn from steppers' native to Chicago. This
opportunity allowed us to become passionate about the dance, its
history, and its future. This passion was the impetus that compelled us
to expose this dance to folks in Boston and the New England states.
In 2006 we formed our dance organization The Original Steppers of
Boston, at that time we no longer had a Chicago-trained stepper based in
our city to provide dance instruction. After being exposed to this dance
there was no way any of us here in Boston was going to sit idly by and
let this go by the wayside. Once we were exposed there was no turning
back. The impact of "Chicago style
steppin' was more than we ever realized, even more so when our
instructor moved back to Chicago. We made a collective decision that we
love this expression in dance too much and we wanted to do whatever we
needed to do to continue. In order to survive many of us had to travel
out of state to maintain our skills. In order to thrive we returned to
Boston with knowledge that we were willing to share and teach others. We
also make the effort to host workshops with nationally recognized
Steppin' instructors; LC Henderson, Sarah Teagle, Pat Clay, Charlotte,
Lady Margaret, Charnice, Tanya Nash, Shereda Newborn, Dominique
Robinson, Larry Collins, Kammal Smith, and a host of others whom may be
not be nationally known but certainly have made a memorable contribution
to our early beginnings here in Boston to help spread the seeds of this
dance. Whether these people are coming to our city to teach, or whether
we are traveling on the road to participate in one of their many
workshops or events. We enjoy these opportunities, and are looking
forward to the many challenges we face, and to the progress that we
believe that we are making.
We are excited about National Chicago Style Steppers Day. We are looking
forward to our participation on this day. We are eager to contribute, do
our small part to make this day a national success. Hopefully this day
will bring more exposure to the dance nationally. Assist in bringing it
to the forefront, even if it's for a day in areas well outside of
Chicago.
Our thoughts are not to make this event a day for overt, organizational
self- promotion; however we expect and encourage the members of various
Boston organizations to wear their gear, t-shirts, hats, etc to express
unity in our desire and dedication to keep steppin' alive and well. The
New England Steppers and the Original Steppers of Boston are
collaborating to bring National Chicago Style Steppers Day to the
Boston, at the American Legion Post, 56 Harvard Ave, Hyde Park, MA
