Yesterday, I decided to use a
graphic I had previously used last year for Valentines. I used it
because the name in the graphic says it all so it seemed appropriate
for the holiday and was the topic I was going to originally pursue
for the column.
Because of all of the discussions I had before writing the column
about the National Chicago Style Steppers Day, I decided to delay
writing on that subject for the day and concentrate on what people
were talking about. After all, knowledge is power so I felt
compelled to pass on as much information as possible.
Friday night as I worked on some design work late into the night, I
had the TV turned on to the opening ceremonies of the winter
Olympics. I usually have the tube turned on while I work it's sort
of like background noise most of the time and when I need a breather
I turn and watch whatever is on. That's just part of my creative
approach and it usually works for me.
Watching the Olympians parade in from each country, I couldn't help
but feel
their passion for what they were
doing. They've trained long and hard to get to this venue and prove to
themselves and the world what they were made of. That’s passion!
The program showed Canadian history and told the story of the different
parts of the great expanse to the north of the USA ending in Vancouver,
BC the site of the Olympics. The show was great and it showed the love
Canadians have for their country and the passion they hold to be the
best on the world stage.
Watching the lighting of the Olympic flame and feeling it… that’s
passion!
There are times when I look at the dance floor and see a couple or an
individual who exudes passion for stepping. Granted, everyone doesn't
show their passion for Chicago style stepping the same way. Sometimes
you can see it on their face or the way they carry their body (body
language).
Some steppers show their passion through the amount of intensity they
use as they execute a series of moves while others try the same move
over and over again in order to achieve mastery of that move.
Passion for the dance comes in many forms and when it comes to Chicago
style stepping, nobody will be able to find people (who have stuck with
this dance) who lack that quality.
It starts with the instructors. The best ones are able to not only teach
people Chicago style stepping
but they also manage to some how magically transfer their passion for
the dance to many of their students. Passion is something you feel and
when the conditions are "made right" it's contagious.
Steppers clubs are groups of people who feel passion for the dance in
such a way they must put on events so others can share the dance. It
doesn’t matter if they're old skool or new skool… it's their passion for
the dance that drives them. Of course when you put a bunch of passionate
people together there are disagreements (and there's more than enough of
that to go around in our community), but things usually find a way of
working out. There probably wouldn't be nearly as many steppers groups
and clubs if these disagreements didn't happen between passionate
people.
All of the groups you see in the steppers community and in cyberspace as
well are a result of people putting their passion for Chicago style
stepping out to the world to share.
The National Chicago Style Steppers Day event came out of a passion to
see the dance and the people who make up its community continue to bring
the genre to the next level by honoring both with its own day.
It doesn’t matter if you're old skool, new skool, or no skool, six
count, eight count, or no count, East Coast, West Coast, Midwest or
South. Across the country we're all Steppers 4 Ever! The dance is here
for everyone to enjoy and to be shared… everywhere. It's our Passion.
