Steppers Beat column is sponsored by:
Steppers West Associates "A Memorial Day Weekend Jam" starting May
28, 2010 through May 31, 2010 at The Plaza Hotel and Casino One Main
St., in Las Vegas, NV, 89101. They are offering a 4 Day Package Deal
for $80!
First, I want to pay homage to
the late great Teddy Pendergrass. He was one of the leading
R&B stars of the 1970s, died at the age of 59. Pendergrass died in a
Philadelphia hospital, his son told the Associated Press. He was the
former lead singer of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes.
OK I admit it; I've been keeping something under my hat for a
little while now. I was told by one of the most recognizable names
in Chicago style steppers competitions that they were retiring from
competing and teaching. They asked me to stay anonymous until they
actually make the move into what they are going to do. I know this
is sort of a tease but its news nonetheless. If you're close
to this multiple time champion you probably already know and I'm
sure when they are ready to let the cat out of the bag, they will
let me know.
The King's Dream weekend is
now under way in Los Angeles. It's being
billed as Los Angeles biggest event of the year. They are really working
on developing some unity according to everything I've read.
For the last couple of years people have come back from the yearly event
with a bad taste in their mouths after seeing the competition from
different sides of the fence display a nasty divide in that community.
The hype machine has been in ultra high gear for the last couple of
weeks and I've been getting various announcements in my inbox from
multiple sources five and six times a day. I'm sure they will
figure it out and get the event back on track⦠hopefully it will be this
year. Good luck L.A. Steppers!
The event may now be suffering the same fate as the
Majestic Gents
annual Memorial Day convention after they tried to move it out of Miami
a few years ago. You'll notice this year the Gents event will be back in
Florida this year, but only after several other Memorial Day weekend
events have made it to the forefront.
Sunshine has
her cruise, The
Sole Fest in Raleigh, as well as the
Las Vegas Weekend Jam all appear to be picking up steam as
alternatives to that event. As the "steppers pie" gets larger and more
Chicago style steppers are in the fold this may not be an issue as in
prior years as all of the mentioned events are high quality events
presenting steppers fun for the participants.
As many of you may know, I work closely with Monique Salter of the Step
and Think Pink BCA Foundation as her webmaster. If you visit the website
you will notice the banner on the home page of
StepandThinkPink.Org now shows a date and location for 12 Hour
Step-A-Thon. This will be a huge event and it's all for a good cause.
Keep watching the site as the event is taking form now.
There are several annoyances on Facebook I wanted to address today.
First let me explain I use Facebook to network with
Chicago style steppers and their organizations. I have absolutely no
use for applications like mafia, farms, sorority, hugs, kisses, pillows,
and the seeming unlimited number of annoyances that appear on my wall.
I'm not there to play; I'm there to pass information.
The "remove button" has become my new best friend.
I'm also getting tired of seeing these groups like "stop Facebook from
charging us" First thing I have to tell you is according to virtually
all of the anti-virus companies have issued alerts stating the groups
are a scam designed by hackers to infect your computers. Second,
Facebook has issued statements saying they have no plans to charge for
their service since they are advertising supported.
I would like to see Facebook create a new category called
acquaintances or something similar
because we all know the majority of the people we call friends on the
social site are actually people we know casually or indirectly through
our extended network. The new category could limit the use to passing
information and bypassing the posting of applications to people's walls.
Under the not an annoyance on Facebook category, our group
Chicago style steppers is about to go over the three thousand
member mark. The size of the group is
much more than I initially expected as I'm sure most of you will
remember I said I stated I figured around 1500 steppers were on the
site. I guess I should set my goals higher! I guess I may have to start
building some sort of hierarchy within the group so we can start doing
some things around the country. Anyone interested? I'll be sending an
email to that effect to the group once we go over 3000 in the next day
or two.
