I'm
still pondering the speed of delivery of the news over the internet,
have been all weekend long MJ's story isn't the only case of course as
this is happening with virtually every news story. Even the situation in
Iran is being reported by citizen journalists despite their ruler's
displeasure with the fact. Twitter gets it out fastest (the 140
character limit works toward speed); then people discuss it on Facebook
(sometimes to death). Of course the biggest difficulty as I see it is
being to ferret out the rumors, planted stories, photos that went
through Photoshop and outright lies from the truth. We have many of the
same problems in the
Chicago style steppers community (these are usually fueled by greed,
avarice or anger, or envy). The question is how to leverage the power of
the "new media" on the web for the good of the dance. I came up with one
way to bring more events, class listings and workshops to you using
Facebook. I created a new global group called
Chicago style stepping (Join the group!). The fact it's called a "Global
Group" is important, because everyone on Facebook can see it,
not just friends. It's another way to bring the dance to the masses.
Another way I want to use the group can be signified by this wall
posting I did today; Do you have
or know of a Chicago style steppers class you would like to publicize on
Facebook and to the larger outside audience? Perhaps you know of a
steppers workshop or a steppers event that needs to be shared. Post it
on the wall in the
Chicago style stepping group and it will also get posted on
SteppersUSA.Com listings of events, classes and workshops.
I have an idea for using twitter too, but it may prove to be more
complicated as it has something to do with events and contests, but I
need to speak with a few people before making it happen.

As many of you may already know I started a new web
site for the benefit of the greater steppers community. It's called
History of Stepping Project. I wish to encourage you to add your
knowledge to the timeline. If you know anything about stepping, please
share this with the public on this site. We are looking for all
information related to stepping from it's beginnings to the present. The
information literally includes everything from clubs and bars which held
steppers sets and parties to contests and the participants and results,
to when different steppers organizations and classes started, who the
instructors were and are; Musical bands, and artists, DJ's, radio and
television personalities, Movies, videos, and photos… literally
everything stepping.
Creating an accurate historic timeline will go a long
way toward helping the community take the next step in its logical
progression as it continues to grow nationwide and will become a
valuable resource for all in the future.
Your input, your knowledge and your effort have made the dance what it
is today. Don't you feel your place (and your organization's) in the
timeline is well deserved? I do!
Please send an email to your members or readers inviting them to
participate. Place a link on your web site also please. All support is
appreciated!
The effort requires more than just posting the information. The need for fact checkers, people willing to do some research exists in this important ongoing project. Just a few minutes a week can make a difference.
Thank You for your time!
