I
got an email from Stephanie from South Carolina who is looking for
steppers in her state. I suggested she post on the bar that she’s
looking for some local steppers. Hopefully, someone will reach out to
her. I spent hours doing what I normally do in less than an hour
yesterday because I’m working off my laptop. The photos are up from
Tuesdays benefit and now that I have those done, I can get some more
things in order. Tonight, I’m going to make my way to Rello’s birthday
set at Orbies in Hammond. Recently, someone compared to the steppers
community (in Chicago) to their days in high school. I decided to hear
them out before jumping at an old and tired comparison. After hearing
the person out, I found myself in agreement with some of what was said.
High school is a time in life where people go through a lot of changes.
Going through those pre and post pubescent years are not periods I would
want to go through again, but the lessons in life that are learned about
self and others create groundwork for adulthood. Relatively speaking,
Chicago style stepping is a very young dance community when compared
with other legacy dance communities. We think we know it all and when we
go to prove it, mysteriously something more comes up presenting a new
challenge to our growth. As a comparison, think of that big move you say
someone doing at the set that you said to yourself, "I can do that"…
You're out there dancing like you are the master of dance until you find
out you've been doing it all wrong. Now don't tell me you haven't
experienced something along that vein either as a dancer or back in your
youth (when you "knew it all"). What's the point? Ask yourself how long
it took you to learn how smart your elders really were all along.
Perhaps looking around and learning from others mistakes can save us all
some time and effort as the community and dance matures from its
childhood into adulthood.

As many of you may already know I started a new web
site for the benefit of the greater steppers community. It's called
History of Stepping Project. I wish to encourage you to add your
knowledge to the timeline. If you know anything about stepping, please
share this with the public on this site. We are looking for all
information related to stepping from it's beginnings to the present. The
information literally includes everything from clubs and bars which held
steppers sets and parties to contests and the participants and results,
to when different steppers organizations and classes started, who the
instructors were and are; Musical bands, and artists, DJ's, radio and
television personalities, Movies, videos, and photos… literally
everything stepping.
Creating an accurate historic timeline will go a long
way toward helping the community take the next step in its logical
progression as it continues to grow nationwide and will become a
valuable resource for all in the future.
Your input, your knowledge and your effort have made the dance what it
is today. Don't you feel your place (and your organization's) in the
timeline is well deserved? I do!
Please send an email to your members or readers inviting them to
participate. Place a link on your web site also please. All support is
appreciated!
The effort requires more than just posting the information. The need for fact checkers, people willing to do some research exists in this important ongoing project. Just a few minutes a week can make a difference.
Thank You for your time!
