One
thing the new site (dancefetish.com) points out is something I've been attempting to say
for a while now. Social networking is here to stay and in order to be
viable on the web and in real life we must participate in order to be
relevant in 2009 and beyond. MySpace isn't the answer and Facebook
proved that. Face book's not the answer, Twitter is proving that. There
are too many photo sharing sites out there to list. While You Tube is
the giant in video sharing, it and all of the other video sharing sites
have their limitations. Proprietary systems that lock you into using a
single way or source of communicating is like having a telephone that
can only call phones within one phone exchange. In other words you
wouldn't be able to call someone in the next city, state or country.
Another example would be like people in Detroit dancing Detroit Style
Chicago stepping instead of Chicago style stepping... Could you hear the
screams? Yes
until social networking grows beyond the bounds of non-interoperability
our ability to communicate with each other will be crippled. Everything
concerning social networking needs to be open source, or in plain
English, just plain open. If I have a Twitter account for example, I
should be able to see and post on all other social networks with that
ID. I don't need twelve phone numbers to communicate with people in
other locations. I call them and they pick up the phone. Try that on any
of the social networks and you will need to make an account. It's time
to unify. That's why I choose the Google solution for this site. They
are the closest to actually unifying communications across media. It's
really new and has a long way to go, but its Google and if there's an 8
million pound gorilla in the room, it would be Google so that's where
I'm putting my money. Have a Yahoo account? You can use Friend Connect.
Have an AOL account… A Google account… perhaps an OpenID Account? All
work with The Friend Connect network. There's no locking you into yet
another username and password combination to remember and you can
interact with other Chicago style steppers across the networks. You can
use what you have to make friends, share information, and promote your
club or event. If the internet rumor mill is correct, Google will buy
Twitter and if you thought it was big before, watch out!

This is an open message to ALL steppers. Please share it with as many people as possible.
As many of you may already know I started a new web
site for the benefit of the greater steppers community. It's called
History of Stepping Project. I wish to encourage you to add your
knowledge to the timeline. If you know anything about stepping, please
share this with the public on this site. We are looking for all
information related to stepping from it's beginnings to the present. The
information literally includes everything from clubs and bars which held
steppers sets and parties to contests and the participants and results,
to when different steppers organizations and classes started, who the
instructors were and are; Musical bands, and artists, DJ's, radio and
television personalities, Movies, videos, and photos… literally
everything stepping.
Creating an accurate historic timeline will go a long
way toward helping the community take the next step in its logical
progression as it continues to grow nationwide and will become a
valuable resource for all in the future.
Your input, your knowledge and your effort have made the dance what it
is today. Don't you feel your place (and your organization's) in the
timeline is well deserved? I do!
Please send an email to your members or readers inviting them to
participate. Place a link on your web site also please. All support is
appreciated!
The effort requires more than just posting the information. The need for fact checkers, people willing to do some research exists in this important ongoing project. Just a few minutes a week can make a difference.
Thank You for your time!
