History Can Repeat

Can history repeat itself? That's the question we must ask ourselves about the future of Chicago style stepping when we look at the current dance phenomenon referred to as soul line dancing as its gaining prominence on the dance floors nationally.
Events and sets which once billed as Chicago style steppers events are now promoting themselves as stepping and line dance events.
Soul line dancing which was once a short distraction from an evening of stepping is no longer getting the fifteen minutes or so of valuable floor time.
A couple of weeks ago I actually tracked the amount of time stepping lost the floor to line dancing at an event and the net loss was an hour and seven minutes (and I always leave before an event ends so there may have been more).
We know stepping took a back seat to other dance sensations in previous years as it started to take root on the dance floors in the clubs of Chicago.

Stepping spent a number of years as a very small niche that languished in the background as extremely popular dances such as disco catapulted into national prominence.
As we know Chicago style stepping has staying power, but as I noted in several previous articles, many people teaching and promoting soul line dancing have been promoting the dance as stepping.
Over the last few years SteppersUSA.Com has had quite a few class submissions from people teaching soul line dancing while calling it stepping. As a matter of fact this past week alone I've had six such submissions.
I've also mentioned in previous articles that some instructors are attempting to teach both forms of dance at the same time (which might line their pockets but certainly can't produce a quality product). The dances need to be taught independently of each other… at different times by qualified instructors.
Qualified instructors is another story for another day.
