Today's Steppers Beat Column is sponsored by: 50 + Classic Steppers set tonight at Chez Roue 5200 W. Chicago Ave. Chicago, IL from 5pm - 11pm.
The art of enjoying oneself when dancing seems on the surface to be a lost art form. There's so much public emphasis placed on the competitors and the competitive aspect of the dance; (which I feel is only representative of a very small percentage of the steppers market) we seemed to forget to have fun when on the set. The vast majority of Chicago style steppers will never participate in a steppers contest. The vast majority of Chicago style steppers will never travel to another city for the purpose of "getting their step on." The vast majority of Chicago style steppers don't want to make their goal to be a trend setter like Tykmyn or Dre. They just want to be comfortable with the dance and enjoy themselves when they are with their friends, or in the club, or at a party. To enjoy the dance you don't need the cameras in your face, you don't need a crowd to sit and watch and dissect your every move. Sometimes the reporting of what's happening in the Chicago style steppers community focuses on the problems of the dance as a commercial institution but that shouldn't detract from your fun. Should everyone be involved in making the changes on how our dance and community should move forward? Yes! Everyone should have a voice (and be listened to) but at the same time most of the people on the dance floor decided to learn the dance with a goal of having fun and just being able to enjoy ourselves regardless

Story Continues Below

of which school of dance anyone belongs to or if the person stepping next to you is (or isn't) a world class dancer. I asked about killer tips for steppers yesterday and Billie Walker came through with a good one… "I think a good killer tip is to smile when you're dancing, I know sometime we zone out when our favorite steppers cut is being played by the DJ, but you will be surprised how pleasant it makes your dance experience when you are smiling and having fun. I hear so many students complain about not having fun when learning the dance, so they get discouraged and stop attending the workshops. A lot of new moves come out of smiling and having fun while you're steppin and it also makes your partner put his/hers best foot forward. Everybody is not trying to compete they just want to learn the dance and enjoy doing the dance when out at different steppin events. So as Janet Jackson says, ENJOY!!!! That is my motto when I step anywhere." Now, those of you who have been around the steppers community for more than a minute may remember the "steppers face" from years gone by. It was supposed to indicate how concentrated and how cool your game was by never changing expression. Well, with the growth of the dance and wider acceptance of the dance all I can say is thank goodness the "steppers face" has been replaced with a smile. The tip was a great one Billie and I'll add it to the "Killer Tips" page.
Our Chicago Style Stepping Facebook group reached that milestone yesterday. We now have over 2000 members in the largest steppers group on Facebook. It's time to go to work steppers! We're Steppers 4 Ever!

A Message To All Steppers

Please copy the message below and send it on to as many steppers as you can please!

This is an open message to ALL steppers. Please share it with as many people as possible.

As many of you may already know I started a new web site for the benefit of the greater steppers community. It's called History of Stepping Project. I wish to encourage you to add your knowledge to the timeline. If you know anything about stepping, please share this with the public on this site. We are looking for all information related to stepping from it's beginnings to the present. The information literally includes everything from clubs and bars which held steppers sets and parties to contests and the participants and results, to when different steppers organizations and classes started, who the instructors were and are; Musical bands, and artists, DJ's, radio and television personalities, Movies, videos, and photos… literally everything stepping.
Creating an accurate historic timeline will go a long way toward helping the community take the next step in its logical progression as it continues to grow nationwide and will become a valuable resource for all in the future.
Your input, your knowledge and your effort have made the dance what it is today. Don't you feel your place (and your organization's) in the timeline is well deserved? I do!
Please send an email to your members or readers inviting them to participate. Place a link on your web site also please. All support is appreciated!

The effort requires more than just posting the information. The need for fact checkers, people willing to do some research exists in this important ongoing project. Just a few minutes a week can make a difference.

Thank You for your time!
