the spirit of perfect 20/20 vision into the past and being the master of
the obvious no contest year would be complete if I failed to mention the
judging at the WLSC. Of course there were the typical complaints from
people from cities other than Chicago that the judges were biased in
favor of Chicago's steppers (We hear it every year). Those who didn't
win blame the fact on the judging. Let's face it when competitive people
don't win in a contest, lashing out and anger are two possible side
effects and we tend to see those behaviors long before we see the
gracious losers (who are in the majority). Believe me being from
Chicago, we all understand the wait until next year attitude better than
most... It's a learned behavior after years of practice. Perhaps that's
why in Chicago we feel a certain amount of compassion for losers and
encourage them to keep trying. Of course it's always the judges fault!
Just like last year, and the year before, and the year before that. The
fact is the judging, no matter how it is composed, be it old skool, new
skool, or any combination is no better than it was any year prior. It
just has to be accepted as is... Thus the name judge. Hopefully they can
start to implement some of the suggestions tendered on this web site
using technology to make the process more transparent and immediate.
There will be more on this later. I hope you are
wearing Blue today!
In Other Stepping News...
For those of you in Chicago, There's an event coming up this week you
probably don't want to miss. There will be a WLSC Viewing and Appreciation Party
on Wednesday at Mr. G's. They have put together raw footage from the
competition without all of the frills (Or the K Jon concert or any of
the in-between performance stuff). It's the way I feel all steppers
videos should be. No Hollywood production, just dancing, and full body
shots. The contest winners will be there too. Worth the $5 for
admission.

As many of you may already know I started a new web
site for the benefit of the greater steppers community. It's called
History of Stepping Project. I wish to encourage you to add your
knowledge to the timeline. If you know anything about stepping, please
share this with the public on this site. We are looking for all
information related to stepping from it's beginnings to the present. The
information literally includes everything from clubs and bars which held
steppers sets and parties to contests and the participants and results,
to when different steppers organizations and classes started, who the
instructors were and are; Musical bands, and artists, DJ's, radio and
television personalities, Movies, videos, and photos… literally
everything stepping.
Creating an accurate historic timeline will go a long
way toward helping the community take the next step in its logical
progression as it continues to grow nationwide and will become a
valuable resource for all in the future.
Your input, your knowledge and your effort have made the dance what it
is today. Don't you feel your place (and your organization's) in the
timeline is well deserved? I do!
Please send an email to your members or readers inviting them to
participate. Place a link on your web site also please. All support is
appreciated!
The effort requires more than just posting the
information. The need for fact checkers, people willing to do some
research exists in this important ongoing project. Just a few minutes a
week can make a difference.
