can steppers help each other? I'm not talking about on an individual
basis, I'm talking about city to city. Some cities have shown us
evidence they have put together a working model others should probably
emulate. For example, Detroit has proved in the WLSC that they are now a
mature stepping community that has learned from the "Zen Masters" from
Chicago on how to "snatch the proverbial pebble from their teachers
hand". Is it time for Detroiters to join with "Stepping
Evangelists" from Chicago on the road? (I know some have been doing so
for a while). How do you choose which cities need the most help? Usually
the way it works is someone from the city calls an instructor to travel
to their city to hold a workshop. This is a very reactive tactic
and perhaps needs to be reviewed. How can steppers be more proactive
in the approach to developing a community in other cities that don't
have a thriving steppers community? Traditionally other dance styles
have relied on exhibitions and dance shows to spread their art form to
the masses. In stepping the massive growth of the dance started in a
similar way by the release of the music video "Step to the name of
Love". There have been a few cases where the same dancers working with
Andre Blackwell have performed in some large venue events like the
boxing match in Vegas not too long ago. But does everything need to be
done in a large grandiose scale? Remember, stepping starts at the local
level. I seem to recall in the last year a few groups danced at events
at some shopping malls, introducing many people to the dance. Perhaps a
renewed, coordinated effort across the country to bring more "stepping
awareness" to each city is in order. I'm looking for suggestions and
ideas, so drop me a line at
webmaster@steppersusa.com.

Friday,
I was notified of my flight itinerary for the
Best
of Both Worlds Dance Extravaganza in Maryland, I'm getting there the
day before the affair starts so I'm not starting this big weekend party
worn out. There will be parties, and workshops and more parties, throw
in performances by three different musical artist's, you know I'll
probably be bushed when I fly back to Chicago the morning after the end
of the event. There will be lots of photos and video (That's why I'm
going to be there). And yes, I'll be updating SteppersUSA as I'm on
location... sort of like the nightly news on location. I may even tape a
few live reports from this first annual event (That's called wearing
more than one hat). This promises to be a really great event, and from
what I understand, there are a few rooms left if you want to go.
If you or anyone you know has any photos, footage or information about

As many of you may already know I started a new web
site for the benefit of the greater steppers community. It's called
History of Stepping Project. I wish to encourage you to add your
knowledge to the timeline. If you know anything about stepping, please
share this with the public on this site. We are looking for all
information related to stepping from it's beginnings to the present. The
information literally includes everything from clubs and bars which held
steppers sets and parties to contests and the participants and results,
to when different steppers organizations and classes started, who the
instructors were and are; Musical bands, and artists, DJ's, radio and
television personalities, Movies, videos, and photos… literally
everything stepping.
Creating an accurate historic timeline will go a long
way toward helping the community take the next step in its logical
progression as it continues to grow nationwide and will become a
valuable resource for all in the future.
Your input, your knowledge and your effort have made the dance what it
is today. Don't you feel your place (and your organization's) in the
timeline is well deserved? I do!
Please send an email to your members or readers inviting them to
participate. Place a link on your web site also please. All support is
appreciated!
The effort requires more than just posting the
information. The need for fact checkers, people willing to do some
research exists in this important ongoing project. Just a few minutes a
week can make a difference.
