It's
time to catch up on some email readers have sent to SteppersUSA. One
reader has a question for those who teach in Illinois: "I
really enjoy watching steppers, I know that I will never know just
surprised at all the classes in Chicago none in southern Illinois
surprising though with all the Chicagoans who come south to go to school
at Southern Illinois university seems though they could offer a class."
Sounds like someone can make some money while spreading the Chicago
Style Stepping dance to another generation in the colleges and
universities of this country. Is there enough interest in Stepping in
those who are in higher education's ranks?
Fellow Web Designer and camera man (and frequent contributor)
Dan Land
agrees with me about The lack of originality in contests, and he says
it's nothing new, so here's a snippet from his latest correspondence...
"I can't imagine sitting through 60 couples of
steppers. I especially can't imagine filming as many, especially when I
know looking through that lens or view finder at couple after couple
appearing as if there is one choreographer in the back teaching that one
move that's popular with the steppers this year to each and every couple
like the one that was popular last year or the year before.
I think what bothered me most when people complained and jumped up and
down like they expected to win the prize duplicating the personality of
someone else. That's like me copying a Spike Lee Movie and expect to
attend the Oscars and win an award for it, never acknowledging the fact
that there are no awards for copy cats Marc, not at the Oscars, The
Worlds Largest or any where else.
There are also no awards or accolades for complainers and each year
people complain and complain and complain. What I find amusing is when
people pay thirty to fifty dollars to come somewhere each year only to
complain. What about all the dancers who were great good and
fascinating. What about the fact no one got shot, killed stabbed or
mugged coming in or out. What about the fact that a group of people
could actually sit in a ballroom for hours and hours, watching 60
couples in comfort. You get my point.
I think what I most want to state Marc is it is often hard to watch 60
couples dancing for several hours. It is difficult to have a contest or
any event start late or not provide every thing with perfection. It is
difficult to accept when a favorite couple did not win or someone placed
who should not have placed on down the line. However what none of these
people or complainers ever mention or question is. Where else can they
go sit and do this on this level, what other group could they name to
accept such responsibility with minimal unexpected occurrence and when
Marc and I mean when will these people stop complaining about what went
wrong and talk or report on what did go right, starting with arriving
and returning home safe." Sometimes it's good to see another
persons views, opinions and perspectives.

As many of you may already know I started a new web
site for the benefit of the greater steppers community. It's called
History of Stepping Project. I wish to encourage you to add your
knowledge to the timeline. If you know anything about stepping, please
share this with the public on this site. We are looking for all
information related to stepping from it's beginnings to the present. The
information literally includes everything from clubs and bars which held
steppers sets and parties to contests and the participants and results,
to when different steppers organizations and classes started, who the
instructors were and are; Musical bands, and artists, DJ's, radio and
television personalities, Movies, videos, and photos… literally
everything stepping.
Creating an accurate historic timeline will go a long
way toward helping the community take the next step in its logical
progression as it continues to grow nationwide and will become a
valuable resource for all in the future.
Your input, your knowledge and your effort have made the dance what it
is today. Don't you feel your place (and your organization's) in the
timeline is well deserved? I do!
Please send an email to your members or readers inviting them to
participate. Place a link on your web site also please. All support is
appreciated!
The effort requires more than just posting the
information. The need for fact checkers, people willing to do some
research exists in this important ongoing project. Just a few minutes a
week can make a difference.
