So
far this year if you look at the contest's held so far, you could say
the (contest) war hasn't been going very well on all fronts. Perhaps
reaching into (loosely) related dances like
Hand Dancing, Ballroom, Southern
Swing, and other dances based on the principles of the original
Lindy Hop,
Cakewalk,
Bop, and other historic predecessors wasn't a good idea. Why? It's
been said many times that the dances can't be judged fairly between each
other, Chicago style steppers "know" this and won't enter these
contests. At least that was the answer I got when asking steppers why
they didn't get into those contests like Merry Green's "Steppin' Across
America" Contest, and the Baton Rouge Contest. From what I understand,
the contest's were well attended, but the "problem" was the steppers
wouldn't compete on a wholesale scale. What about the Club D'Elegance
contest? Until the finals, that dedicated steppers contest
suffered from poor attendance and participation in comparison to the
past. That contest and club, and promoter, suffer from what I would coin
as "a past bad image perception" which to this day (they) are
attempting to turn around. (This includes all of the owners selling out
to one of the other owners from the original 3-G's). At the same time,
the Orbies contest was extremely well attended (at least from the
two semi's and the finals which I attended. Oh, and for the record I
attended all of the Club D'Elegance contest prelims, semi's and
Finals). This years WLSC has spurred lot's of interest by both
observers and participants. The
web site has
been seeing an increase over last year and the semi-finals aren't over
yet. On September second, the Chicago's Largest (pre) Steppers Contest
is going to happen at Lexington House offering a $1000 cash prize. If
you will remember, back in January the First annual Chicago's Largest
was plagued with snow and cold, but may be a warm-up for the WLSC on
September 20th.

This is an open message to ALL steppers. Please share it with as many people as possible.
As many of you may already know I started a new web
site for the benefit of the greater steppers community. It's called
The History of Stepping Project. I wish to encourage you to add your
knowledge to the timeline. If you know anything about stepping, please
share this with the public on this site. We are looking for all
information related to stepping from it's beginnings to the present. The
information literally includes everything from clubs and bars which held
steppers sets and parties to contests and the participants and results,
to when different steppers organizations and classes started, who the
instructors were and are; Musical bands, and artists, DJ's, radio and
television personalities, Movies, videos, and photos… literally
everything stepping.
Creating an accurate historic timeline will go a long
way toward helping the community take the next step in its logical
progression as it continues to grow nationwide and will become a
valuable resource for all in the future.
Your input, your knowledge and your effort have made the dance what it
is today. Don't you feel your place (and your organization's) in the
timeline is well deserved? I do!

The effort requires more than just posting the information. The need for fact checkers, people willing to do some research exists in this important ongoing project. Just a few minutes a week can make a difference.
