the
Club D'Elegance
Annual Steppers contest is now history, but it didn't go out with a
whimper by any means. Like every contest I've ever been to, it started
late, but credit to Sunshine, it could have started much later (I
remember some contest's starting close to midnight, this one started
much earlier). Sunshine told the crowd she was holding the contest
for a while as Feo Duncan from Flint MI was late because of a death in
the family. She got some grief from some members of the audience over
this, but the contest started about fifteen or twenty minutes after the
announcement. Everyone danced good enough to win in some of the
contest's I've seen in the past and that's no joke, but without calling
anyone out by name there were a few who, in my personal opinion seemed
to lack the energy to win the Club D'Elegance contest (Which
historically seems to require that extra something to win.
It seems to me that a near "perfect storm" happened in this contest for
Smoke and Rhonda from the beginning...
In the preliminary on June 26th, it was Smoke and Rhonda who were
dancing to their third song, the music stopped due to a malfunction in
the DJ Booth. As previously
reported, In true steppers style, they kept dancing. That Night they
got a near perfect score. Last night they "stole the show" in the
elimination phase of the night, and you could tell by the audience
reaction to a virtually perfect face to the floor drop move (not to be
confused with a dip where the lead guides their partner slowly backward
in an embrace. It once again garnered a near perfect score from the
judges. In the final judging, which was done by paper ballot by the
crowd, Smoke and Rhonda were called the winners. I will have the
contest DVD ready in short order and you can
pre-order it here. I will not be carrying pre-made DVD's around, so
If you want a DVD either
order it online, or pre-pay in person... It helps me keep my cost's
down in these days of "imagined inflation" (political dig) I'm
sure you understand why I'm not making bulk copies.
Bruce Martin, manager of
Club D'Elegance
reiterated that the club is no longer a sports bar and it's a full time
steppers club. Starting next Thursday, they will start holding weekly
dance contest's with gas cards as the prize for the weekly winners.

As many of you may already know I started a new web
site for the benefit of the greater steppers community. It's called
The History of Stepping Project. I wish to encourage you to add your
knowledge to the timeline. If you know anything about stepping, please
share this with the public on this site. We are looking for all
information related to stepping from it's beginnings to the present. The
information literally includes everything from clubs and bars which held
steppers sets and parties to contests and the participants and results,
to when different steppers organizations and classes started, who the
instructors were and are; Musical bands, and artists, DJ's, radio and
television personalities, Movies, videos, and photos… literally
everything stepping.
Creating an accurate historic timeline will go a long
way toward helping the community take the next step in its logical
progression as it continues to grow nationwide and will become a
valuable resource for all in the future.
Your input, your knowledge and your effort have made the dance what it
is today. Don't you feel your place (and your organization's) in the
timeline is well deserved? I do!
Please send an email to your members or readers inviting them to
participate. Place a link on your web site also please. All support is
appreciated!
The effort requires more than just posting the
information. The need for fact checkers, people willing to do some
research exists in this important ongoing project. Just a few minutes a
week can make a difference.
