Detroit's White Party Weekend
By Markie Bee
Anyone
who knows me also knows over the last few months, I've been pretty
reclusive... Working on web design, video production, flash development,
and of course SteppersUSA's website. Well that changed this weekend in a
big way. I normally don't don' do reviews of individual Steppers events,
who was there and all that. I don't want to reduce this column to a
who's where and who they're dancing with rag. People do that in the
clubs already and most people say it's distasteful and nothing more than
gossip, so I'll leave that alone. I'll let my photos do most of the
talking.
The trip to Detroit was basically done with very little planning and
even less budget. The original idea was to run up to view, photo and
tape Rodney Mack's Friday night Welcome party and World's Largest
Prelims at the party. Things changed quickly. The plan was to ride up
with Rose, and then go back after the event. Tykmyn couldn't work with
Moe for his workshop the following afternoon so Rose got drafted so we
went from a short one day trip to an event filled weekend since we had
to stay overnight. I got some great photos on Friday night and they will
be posted late tonight so I will have links to photos on several sites.
The will be made available here in the mornings newsletter.
Chicago was more than well represented at all of the parties and the
workshops as well. We got to the Friday night party sometime between 11
and midnight. I walked in to the sweltering hot room where people were
more than apparently enjoying themselves and dancing themselves into a
collective giant sweat gland. I have never understood how any venue can
allow a room get that hot especially when they all claim customer
service is so very important to them. Customer comfort is an
important part of the service they offer. It's not the promoters fault
the fault lies with the venue. I do feel promoters should bring that
type of situation to the venue's attention. a promoter needs leverage to
make the situation better for their patrons.
Several couples qualified for the out of town category and the Original
40 and over as well as the walkers categories for the Worlds Largest
Steppers Contest in September. I shot some video. Both
Workshops the following afternoon were well attended as Moe, Rose, and
Dre and Steppin' B did their thing. I talked with Dre and it looks like
he's planning on going after that $10,000 prize in
The
Steppin' Across America Contest. I hung around
throughout the afternoon as the preparations were made for the Main
event. The enthusiasm for this event was evident from the very
beginning. Thirty minutes before the event's doors opened, the line was
a half a block long.
Tickets were sold out a month in advance. Rodney and I talked about that
aspect... so much party and not enough space which leads to the
question, do you go for the mega party at a larger location, (ala the
recent Main event in Tinley Park IL, where an estimated 3000 people were
in attendance). or go with the smaller, more exclusive event? I can see
the Detroit area is really ready to do it's own thing on a much larger
scale than they have been doing... just talking with some people from
the area, you can feel the excitement for dance, not just our Stepping
dance, but all forms of dance. Detroit has successfully melded an event
where ballroomers and steppers are coexisting and maintaining that party
atmosphere. Besides a few small technical glitches with the mixers, the
six Peavey speakers sounded great. The temperature once again became an
issue, but everyone "partied like it was 1999". I couldn't make it to
the After party, it was just as well anyway, because I shot so many
photos over the weekend, I drained eleven batteries so I couldn't shoot
any more! Over all Great job! Great people! Great Party!

As many of you may already know I started a new web
site for the benefit of the greater steppers community. It's called
The History of Stepping Project. I wish to encourage you to add your
knowledge to the timeline. If you know anything about stepping, please
share this with the public on this site. We are looking for all
information related to stepping from it's beginnings to the present. The
information literally includes everything from clubs and bars which held
steppers sets and parties to contests and the participants and results,
to when different steppers organizations and classes started, who the
instructors were and are; Musical bands, and artists, DJ's, radio and
television personalities, Movies, videos, and photos… literally
everything stepping.
Creating an accurate historic timeline will go a long
way toward helping the community take the next step in its logical
progression as it continues to grow nationwide and will become a
valuable resource for all in the future.
Your input, your knowledge and your effort have made the dance what it
is today. Don't you feel your place (and your organization's) in the
timeline is well deserved? I do!
Please send an email to your members or readers inviting them to
participate. Place a link on your web site also please. All support is
appreciated!
The effort requires more than just posting the
information. The need for fact checkers, people willing to do some
research exists in this important ongoing project. Just a few minutes a
week can make a difference.
