Stepping Contest 1st Day Feedback

Apparently
something I said in Yesterday's column,
Stepping Contest Mania Begins
touched a nerve when I said, "I'm sure everyone is going to be
watching to see who is going to compete this year, as well as how fairly
judged they will be. The finals judging at the Club D'Elegance contest
will be the most interesting with the audience being the judge (as long
as no one stacks the crowd in favor of one couple or another) which
could reduce the contest results to sham status." The article wasn't up
for an hour and I got email asking me to fix the link to the story
(THANKS). Soon after, the email started. Everything from a newsletter
subscriber Carla, "I think only people who are
online all of the time knew there was a contest at 3G's (Club
D'Elegance)? Don't they plug anymore?" To a response from
Sunshine who said, "I can guarantee that
audience being the judge will not be able to stack the crowd in favor of
one couple or another because they will not know who will be the top 3
until the night of the contest. Example: Say there are 12 final couples,
the judges will pick the top three out of the 12 that will go on to the
dance off. The audience will have to pick the winners from one of those
3 couples and those three couples may not have brought anyone or may not
be the popular ones. It will be a secret ballot process instead of
clapping. So there will be an hour delay between the dance off and the
announcement of the winner that night. I think that this contest will be
more fairer than any other contest in the past. (As you know it was when
I did it at the casino and it would not reduce the contest results to
sham status)."
The start of the
Club D'Elegance Annual Steppers contest yesterday really wasn't much
different than the first day of the contest last year (See
Photos). (Last year the manager at the club attempted to start the
contest a week early and there were only two couples who danced and only
two the following week). I'll post video of the first performance by
James Eubanks & Tineka Wiley If I have time today before I leave for
Detroit and the WLSC Preliminary. PS, If I can't get an internet
connection over the weekend there won't be a newsletter tomorrow.

This is an open message to ALL steppers. Please share it with as many people as possible.
As many of you may already know I started a new web
site for the benefit of the greater steppers community. It's called
The History of Stepping Project. I wish to encourage you to add your
knowledge to the timeline. If you know anything about stepping, please
share this with the public on this site. We are looking for all
information related to stepping from it's beginnings to the present. The
information literally includes everything from clubs and bars which held
steppers sets and parties to contests and the participants and results,
to when different steppers organizations and classes started, who the
instructors were and are; Musical bands, and artists, DJ's, radio and
television personalities, Movies, videos, and photos… literally
everything stepping.
Creating an accurate historic timeline will go a long
way toward helping the community take the next step in its logical
progression as it continues to grow nationwide and will become a
valuable resource for all in the future.
Your input, your knowledge and your effort have made the dance what it
is today. Don't you feel your place (and your organization's) in the
timeline is well deserved? I do!

appreciated!
The effort requires more than just posting the information. The need for fact checkers, people willing to do some research exists in this important ongoing project. Just a few minutes a week can make a difference.
