The Steppers Beat News and Opinion

[5/8/2008 SteppersUSA News]
Officially official
By Markie Bee

Chicago City SealDoes Chicago have an official dance? I mean an "Officially official" dance as recognized by the city, the state and the nation as the "Official Dance of Chicago". I searched the web and couldn't find anything that indicated any dance was the "Official Dance of Chicago". Call it a crazy thought if you will, but what if... Stepping was made the "Official Dance of Chicago". I wonder if it's possible?  I don't even have enough information or the time to actually research in earnest if there is or is not actually a "Official Dance of Chicago". I guess I could ask those of you from Chicago to check into it. Would you? Could you? Would you let me know so I can tell the stepping public the results?
It's not like there aren't dedicated steppers who have clout in Chicago. Many know Pete Frazier works for the City (hmmm insider, a good thing). Have you ever been to Ken Bedford's web site? Just looking at the introduction page of his web site rings of clout.
Let's say for the sake of argument, there isn't a "Official Dance of Chicago". What steps would have to be taken to make "Chicago Style Stepping" the... well you know...
Should there be a petition? Is it just a matter of whispering in a connected persons ear? Is there an "official procedure" to be followed? Perhaps a city council resolution? Are there palms to be greased? How would this be done? Would it take weeks and months of city council debate to make "Chicago Style Stepping" the "Official Dance of Chicago"?
Consider the benefits of becoming "Officially official"... There are bragging rights of course and who wouldn't want bragging rights? I sure wouldn't want to answer to someone who says, "Stepping isn't even the official dance of Chicago"! How do you come back to that? It could be an added benefit to those who promote the dance. It could also create a windfall to those who teach the dance. Just imagine going into a club and asking if they have Stepping, the official dance of Chicago. There could be press releases, Television and radio time could be aired... wow!
Do you think there would be any interest in this? Would you let me know?

Support the History of Stepping Project

Please copy the message below and send it on to as many steppers as you can please!

This is an open message to ALL steppers. Please share it with as many people as possible.

As many of you may already know I started a new web site for the benefit of the greater steppers community. It's called The History of Stepping Project. I wish to encourage you to add your knowledge to the timeline. If you know anything about stepping, please share this with the public on this site. We are looking for all information related to stepping from it's beginnings to the present. The information literally includes everything from clubs and bars which held steppers sets and parties to contests and the participants and results, to when different steppers organizations and classes started, who the instructors were and are; Musical bands, and artists, DJ's, radio and television personalities, Movies, videos, and photos… literally everything stepping.
Creating an accurate historic timeline will go a long way toward helping the community take the next step in its logical progression as it continues to grow nationwide and will become a valuable resource for all in the future.
Your input, your knowledge and your effort have made the dance what it is today. Don't you feel your place (and your organization's) in the timeline is well deserved? I do!
Please send an email to your members or readers inviting them to participate. Place a link on your web site also please. All support is appreciated!

The effort requires more than just posting the information. The need for fact checkers, people willing to do some research exists in this important ongoing project. Just a few minutes a week can make a difference.

Thank You for your time!
