Steppers Entitlement?
By Markie Bee
Sometimes
real life impersonates politics. It's sad but true. Take the latest
preacher driven controversy in Chicago for example. Father Michael
Pfleger gave a sermon as a guest pastor at the Trinity United Church
where he told it like it is perceived by many in his congregation on the
south side. Remember that one word "perceived", because I'm talking
about perceptions and comparing them to our Chicago style
steppers community.
In video circulating on the Internet, Pfleger said Hillary Clinton
expected to win the nomination before Obama's sudden popularity. "She
just always thought that, 'This is mine. I'm Bill's wife. I'm white.'...
And then, out of nowhere, came 'Hey, I'm Barack Obama. And she said, 'Oh
damn, where did you come from? I'm white. I'm entitled. There's a black
man stealing my show"...
Let's play with the words a little bit. Then, out of nowhere, came 'Hey
I'm a stepper from someplace other than Chicago." And the Chicago
Stepper said, 'Oh damn, where did you come from? I'm a Chicago Stepper
from Chicago in Chicago. I'm entitled. There's an out of town stepper
stealing my show"...
If you look at the entire video as it was originally posted (below), you
will be able to put the statements Pfleger made into context. This is
also where I draw my comparison from (remember that word perceptions?).
I've heard the entitlement tag bandied about in the steppers community
forever (concerning the dance and the way it's viewed by many in
Chicago). The problem with entitlement in any form (as father
Pfleger is pointing out) is that it carries consequences. There's
no question that the home of the dance is Chicago so lets get that out
of the way right now. Is there a special entitlement for people from
Hamburg Germany because that's where the hamburger as we know it today was invented
there? No! Is there a special entitlement for people from any particular
city because they invented and or popularized anything be it a commodity
or a dance? No!
The risk of alienating supporters of the dance is great. Do we want to
pay that price? Can we afford to pay that price? If there are questions
about the quality of the
dance as it's danced elsewhere, who's fault is it? People from
Chicago travel and teach the dance to others. People from Chicago move
to other cities and teach the dance to others. The fact of the matter is
there is no special entitlement... it brings that perception back
of a false entitlement which people from other cities resent. Don't hold
us responsible? As the beneficiaries of having the knowledge of this
wonderful dance perhaps it's better not to "cry" about the "loss of an
entitlement that wasn't there in the first place.
In the interest of putting things in context this video includes the
part they didn't show on the news.

As many of you may already know I started a new web
site for the benefit of the greater steppers community. It's called
The History of Stepping Project. I wish to encourage you to add your
knowledge to the timeline. If you know anything about stepping, please
share this with the public on this site. We are looking for all
information related to stepping from it's beginnings to the present. The
information literally includes everything from clubs and bars which held
steppers sets and parties to contests and the participants and results,
to when different steppers organizations and classes started, who the
instructors were and are; Musical bands, and artists, DJ's, radio and
television personalities, Movies, videos, and photos… literally
everything stepping.
Creating an accurate historic timeline will go a long
way toward helping the community take the next step in its logical
progression as it continues to grow nationwide and will become a
valuable resource for all in the future.
Your input, your knowledge and your effort have made the dance what it
is today. Don't you feel your place (and your organization's) in the
timeline is well deserved? I do!
Please send an email to your members or readers inviting them to
participate. Place a link on your web site also please. All support is
appreciated!
The effort requires more than just posting the
information. The need for fact checkers, people willing to do some
research exists in this important ongoing project. Just a few minutes a
week can make a difference.
