Steppers Contest Dribble
By Markie Bee

You may have noticed I haven't said much about contest's this (contest) year (so far). There's a good reason for it too... Actually several good reasons, and I'll attempt to spell them out for you today. In the world of A & P (Advertising and Promotion) there is an age old saying which goes, "Any advertising is good advertising". But there is also a term called "Overexposure". I feel one of the many flaws in the "system of contest's" we have experienced in the last few years, especially online, is the fact that we discuss, and post, and hype contests to a degree that once the contest actually happens... Many people don't actually go (some as a reaction to discussions, and posts I've been told)... The reality of the actual contest does not live up to the hyped up expectations created by the "Overexposure". We want to call steppers contests the "Premiere Showcase of the Dance", but frankly I feel, every contest I've been to has been long, boring, and less than entertaining. (Generally speaking, I feel much of the very best dancing has been in the preliminary rounds of the contest's I've attended).
In some ways, contests have been (and may always be) popularity contest's, so the move toward audience judging has (re)manifested this year (I've seen it several times in the past including most recently, the Chicago's Largest in January, and the contest on the boat in Indiana last year run by Sunshine). Again, I did say popularity contest's. I've made it clear in the past judging needs to be fair and unbiased. So what happens to fair and unbiased if a majority of the crowd "likes" the popular couple instead of supporting the best couple dancing? Is that good for the dance?
People seemed to like the re-introduction of the freestyle (err, I mean
New Skool) category last year, and there's a lot of talk (just talk thus far) about the re-introduction of the Masters Category. I wonder if Tykmyn and Kirk White and others who have decided not to participate would change their minds if it were added?
There have been conversations floating around and on the web saying that it gives the "new blood" an opportunity to bring their game to the public eye. Here's a news flash... Every year there are new people who compete both "in town" and out of town. If they can shine in the spotlight they can shine, but if their skills don't measure up, they don't make it to the finals (unless they make it to an early preliminary while there are plenty of slots open... but that's for a later discussion). What do you think? Let us know please Send us an email.

Support the History of Stepping Project

Please copy the message below and send it on to as many steppers as you can please!

This is an open message to ALL steppers. Please share it with as many people as possible.

As many of you may already know I started a new web site for the benefit of the greater steppers community. It's called The History of Stepping Project. I wish to encourage you to add your knowledge to the timeline. If you know anything about stepping, please share this with the public on this site. We are looking for all information related to stepping from it's beginnings to the present. The information literally includes everything from clubs and bars which held steppers sets and parties to contests and the participants and results, to when different steppers organizations and classes started, who the instructors were and are; Musical bands, and artists, DJ's, radio and television personalities, Movies, videos, and photos… literally everything stepping.
Creating an accurate historic timeline will go a long way toward helping the community take the next step in its logical progression as it continues to grow nationwide and will become a valuable resource for all in the future.
Your input, your knowledge and your effort have made the dance what it is today. Don't you feel your place (and your organization's) in the timeline is well deserved? I do!
Please send an email to your members or readers inviting them to participate. Place a link on your web site also please. All support is appreciated!

The effort requires more than just posting the information. The need for fact checkers, people willing to do some research exists in this important ongoing project. Just a few minutes a week can make a difference.

Thank You for your time!
