The Steppers Beat News and Opinion

[5/18/2008 SteppersUSA News]
Why Instructors Need Certification
By Markie Bee

I don't like the fact that any "yahoo off the street" can take six months of any dance and then think they are worthy of being a teacher or instructor. In a nutshell, this is the feeling expressed by virtually all established steppers instructors. Through the years there has been a multitude of complaints by students about learning "The wrong way" and having been taught by people just into getting and "milking" money from them.
I took some time to put together a list (which isn't necessarily in any order or complete) as to why instructors need certification.
1. Certified people in every form of business and arts make more money than those who do not make the effort to get certified. A Professional Certification process offers extraordinary benefits to dance teachers, deeply enriching their dancing and teaching, and greatly expanding their career opportunities.
2. Certified instructors are able to demonstrate at least minimum amount of knowledge of the mechanics and style of the dance. This insures the integrity of the dance. The certificate you receive declares your expertise to the world.
3. The certified instructor shows they care enough about the dance and their students to teach using methods in a manor consistent with universally accepted standards.
4. Certification means the instructor skills and methods are verifiable compared to someone who is not certified. I.E., you know what you are getting.
5. A certified instructor has a voice in setting industry standards through using a unified consensus based on agreement by their certified peers.
6. A certified instructor recognizes the fact that they don't know it all. A certified instructor inspires self-improvement and advancement within themselves and those they teach through ongoing training and education.
7. Certified instructors can differentiate themselves from lesser qualified & experienced teachers.
8. Certification suggests there's a level of competence not available somewhere else.
9. Certification creates brand recognition is such that it adds to the dancer's appeal or customer base, making it an extremely valuable asset.
10. Certification is the first step to being recognized as an expert of the dance.
11. Certified instructors subscribe to a set of ethics. Non-certified instructors don't.
Can you add to this list? Do you disagree with the concept? SteppersUSA wants to know. Please Send us an email.

Support the History of Stepping Project

Please copy the message below and send it on to as many steppers as you can please!

This is an open message to ALL steppers. Please share it with as many people as possible.

As many of you may already know I started a new web site for the benefit of the greater steppers community. It's called The History of Stepping Project. I wish to encourage you to add your knowledge to the timeline. If you know anything about stepping, please share this with the public on this site. We are looking for all information related to stepping from it's beginnings to the present. The information literally includes everything from clubs and bars which held steppers sets and parties to contests and the participants and results, to when different steppers organizations and classes started, who the instructors were and are; Musical bands, and artists, DJ's, radio and television personalities, Movies, videos, and photos… literally everything stepping.
Creating an accurate historic timeline will go a long way toward helping the community take the next step in its logical progression as it continues to grow nationwide and will become a valuable resource for all in the future.
Your input, your knowledge and your effort have made the dance what it is today. Don't you feel your place (and your organization's) in the timeline is well deserved? I do!
Please send an email to your members or readers inviting them to participate. Place a link on your web site also please. All support is appreciated!

The effort requires more than just posting the information. The need for fact checkers, people willing to do some research exists in this important ongoing project. Just a few minutes a week can make a difference.

Thank You for your time!
