Instructors Agony
By Markie Bee
In
a conversation with Bruce Dyer, Master instructor of The
Steppers
Alliance yesterday, among other things, we talked about a problem
many instructors who travel throughout the country as well as in the
Chicago area face on a regular basis. Now, I can't come close to being
as passionate about this issue as Bruce was in our conversation (I did
ask him to write a guest column on the subject and hopefully, he will do
so soon).
The problem I am alluding to is when an instructor goes to another city
and after two or three workshops someone he taught starts teaching
stepping even though they don't even have the basics down pat.
It's a pretty common practice for an instructor to take a student who
has been taking lessons for a couple of weeks and put them with someone
who is just learning the count. The theory behind that (as I have been
told) is teaching someone the basics will make the student in the
teaching role concentrate more on their own basics and execution while
they work with the other (learning) student. I've seen Bruce use his
students in a similar manor as well as some other instructors. In my
observation, some students (the student in the teaching role) take to
the challenge extremely well, while others complain about "doing the
instructors job without compensation."
The basis of the complaint Bruce was talking about is both "stepping
dance fundamental" as well as a strong financial disincentive. He was
telling me about people coming out of class with him and charging $5.00
for a class. We talked about the basic natural laws of business ethics
(or the lack thereof) in the wider steppers community as well as the
need for contracts. "I've stopped advertising where I'm going to do
workshops because others see where I'm going, and they undercut my price
so I loose the business." Dyer said. Of course at that point I pointed
out there is still no universally accepted certification program
which should of course include a business ethics standard members
could subscribe to.

As many of you may already know I started a new web
site for the benefit of the greater steppers community. It's called
The History of Stepping Project. I wish to encourage you to add your
knowledge to the timeline. If you know anything about stepping, please
share this with the public on this site. We are looking for all
information related to stepping from it's beginnings to the present. The
information literally includes everything from clubs and bars which held
steppers sets and parties to contests and the participants and results,
to when different steppers organizations and classes started, who the
instructors were and are; Musical bands, and artists, DJ's, radio and
television personalities, Movies, videos, and photos… literally
everything stepping.
Creating an accurate historic timeline will go a long
way toward helping the community take the next step in its logical
progression as it continues to grow nationwide and will become a
valuable resource for all in the future.
Your input, your knowledge and your effort have made the dance what it
is today. Don't you feel your place (and your organization's) in the
timeline is well deserved? I do!
Please send an email to your members or readers inviting them to
participate. Place a link on your web site also please. All support is
appreciated!
The effort requires more than just posting the
information. The need for fact checkers, people willing to do some
research exists in this important ongoing project. Just a few minutes a
week can make a difference.
