Priorities Change
By Markie Bee
A
bit of business first, SteppersUSA got an email from Deacon
(thedeacondoc@yahoo.com),
who is announcing the need for steppers for a scene in film shot
in Chicago next week. Anyone interested call 773-261-7350. I'm not sure
what film, but if you want to be seen on the big screen, you may want to
check it out.
My morning newspaper is late today. It's usually somewhere near my door
at around 4:30. Yes, I still love to read and get my news from more than
the TV, Radio and the web. I remember when I was around 9 years old, I
got a job delivering newspapers (Tribune in the morning & the Chicago
American in the afternoon) on my bicycle. Adults deliver papers today
from their cars. Sad, an opportunity for kids to learn responsibility
gone. I also remember collecting glass pop bottles for their deposit
money (2 cents for a regular Pepsi bottle, 5 cents for a quart bottle).
Glass bottles went out of style in favor of plastic (Those
bottles paid for many a trip to the candy store or the White Castle on
79th St.). That was in the 1960's. We were "green" and didn't
even know it. Things change as time goes on and priorities change too.
How about priorities in the dance? What were the priorities of those who
were dancing back in the 70's? Were they anything like the priorities
people appear to have today? The 70's is pretty much agreed on as
the era when what is currently called stepping was born from the Bop. If
you look back in history at the predecessors of the Bop there was the
Lindy Hop born in the 1920's at the
fabled Savoy and they had Whitey's Lindy Hoppers, Frankie Manning,
Al Minns, and Long Legged George Grenidge in the 1930's who brought the
dance to the forefront on stage and screen. All these were predecessors
of Jitterbug which turned into the off-time which morphed into Bop.
Someone had a plan, back then, it was Herbert "Whitey" White who
promoted the dance and the dancers. The priority was simple, just make
money through active promotion. Who can we point to in the 70's who
brought this dance to the forefront as it became stepping? There's a big
hole in the history of the dance, because we need to be able to point to
an individual or group of people who loved, promoted and grew this dance
for the sake of continuity and accuracy. History is more than just
milestones in the timeline.
I'm sure the events from the 1990's onward will be chronicled much more
thoroughly simply because of the tools we have at our command ranging
from video to the personal computer and the web.
To be Continued.
If you or anyone you know has any photos, footage or information about

I'd love to add it to what we have. It's Your History! OR

As many of you may already know I started a new web
site for the benefit of the greater steppers community. It's called
The History of Stepping Project. I wish to encourage you to add your
knowledge to the timeline. If you know anything about stepping, please
share this with the public on this site. We are looking for all
information related to stepping from it's beginnings to the present. The
information literally includes everything from clubs and bars which held
steppers sets and parties to contests and the participants and results,
to when different steppers organizations and classes started, who the
instructors were and are; Musical bands, and artists, DJ's, radio and
television personalities, Movies, videos, and photos… literally
everything stepping.
Creating an accurate historic timeline will go a long
way toward helping the community take the next step in its logical
progression as it continues to grow nationwide and will become a
valuable resource for all in the future.
Your input, your knowledge and your effort have made the dance what it
is today. Don't you feel your place (and your organization's) in the
timeline is well deserved? I do!
Please send an email to your members or readers inviting them to
participate. Place a link on your web site also please. All support is
appreciated!
The effort requires more than just posting the
information. The need for fact checkers, people willing to do some
research exists in this important ongoing project. Just a few minutes a
week can make a difference.
