would be an understatement if I said I was nervous about flying to
Maryland tomorrow for the
Best of Both Worlds extravaganza. It's going to be a lot of fun...
I'll actually be able to meet some of the Steppers, Hand Dancers and
many people I hear about, or correspond with via email. I know there of
some of you who are road warriors and the trip is routine, but my
routine hasn't included travel for a long time. There's a song that
goes, "My bags are packed and I'm ready to go" Yea right! Well, it's
true my bags are packed, and unpacked and packed again (I pack one
thing, then remember I need it, take it out and use it and pack it up
again, and of course I keep remembering to take something else). I
haven't traveled a lot over the years (at least the last ten years),
It's not that I don't like travel, or flying... I once did quite a bit
of traveling. On my motorcycle I managed to rack up over 100,000 miles
and hit every state in the country except Alaska (I did ride a rental
bike in Hawaii in the '70's). I'm not afraid of flying. I'm a member of
the 100 club from my service years (over 100 carrier based launches and
arrested landings logged in a TA-4 Skyhawk) as well as several
trans-oceanic flights from both the orient and the middle east. Ah, that
was a long time ago, and lot's of things have changed. The last time I
flew on a domestic Jet, there was no such thing as the TSA, and they
called the flight crew stewardesses and stewards. A round trip
transcontinental flight cost around $189 which included a snack and in
in-flight meal. A drink on a plane cost $2.00 and pop and juices were
free and there was a thing called a smoking light.
Of course, I'm not going to Maryland for vacation, I'm going there to
work. I'm going to shoot hours of video and thousands of photos at this
first of it's kind event where so many dance styles come together. I'm
going to visit every workshop, be right in front for performances of
Lina, K' Jon, and Marcell and the Truth, and at
every dance event over the three day weekend. I've already been told
there are several more trips in my future, so I guess I need to get used
to traveling once again. I'm pretty sure there's an internet connection
so I'll be reporting from the scene. Now if you ask me what time the
newsletter will be published, I can't tell you, and some updates may
be delayed, but I'll be away from Chicago until Monday so that's the way
it is. Check out Seal's new remake of a
walkers classic standard below

As many of you may already know I started a new web
site for the benefit of the greater steppers community. It's called
History of Stepping Project. I wish to encourage you to add your
knowledge to the timeline. If you know anything about stepping, please
share this with the public on this site. We are looking for all
information related to stepping from it's beginnings to the present. The
information literally includes everything from clubs and bars which held
steppers sets and parties to contests and the participants and results,
to when different steppers organizations and classes started, who the
instructors were and are; Musical bands, and artists, DJ's, radio and
television personalities, Movies, videos, and photos… literally
everything stepping.
Creating an accurate historic timeline will go a long
way toward helping the community take the next step in its logical
progression as it continues to grow nationwide and will become a
valuable resource for all in the future.
Your input, your knowledge and your effort have made the dance what it
is today. Don't you feel your place (and your organization's) in the
timeline is well deserved? I do!
Please send an email to your members or readers inviting them to
participate. Place a link on your web site also please. All support is
appreciated!
The effort requires more than just posting the
information. The need for fact checkers, people willing to do some
research exists in this important ongoing project. Just a few minutes a
week can make a difference.
