I go again. I'm off on another rant. You know it was a matter of time.
You know there are those out there (especially in Chicago) who can
manage to find a dark cloud in every silver lining by finding
personalities and (or) actions they don't like for whatever the reason
and making issues out of them. Everyone across the country knows who
this small group of people are, and how they do what they do, but I see,
a fairly wide spread rejection of negativity outside of Chicago. The
event I have been working at in Ellicott City continues to prove to me
people in the steppers community can focus on the milk and cookies
instead of a few crumbs that fall off the cookies. The event is done for
charity and has been attended (so far) mostly by people from the region.
Last night's show was fantastic (I'll have video in the near future) K'
Jon and Marcell and The Truth band were very entertaining (Marcell and
his band are local favorites). The people from out of town included lots
of folks from Detroit, including WLSC Champions from the Out of Town
category, Sherry Gordon and Drew Alexander. Jr. Stepper was in the house
and both attended both of the afternoons workshops of Hand Dance lead by
master instructor, Lawrence Bradford, and the extremely well attended
steppers workshop lead by Moe. The people in this region are hard core
Hand Dancers and they love their slydes, but they are showing a big
thirst for stepping. The lack of attendance by steppers from Chicago was
(In my personal opinion) hurt the movement as (I feel) a lost
opportunity. Patricia Strong and Moe have been putting on a classy event
where they proved Hand Dancers and Steppers can co-exist very nicely and
learn from each other at the same time. To their credit, Pete and Linda
Frazier, and Sharida Newbern were in attendance and dancers from both
dance forms provided demonstrations for the crowd. I made/ renewed
connections with DJ's Rodney Mack, DJ 007, DJ Disco Bird, and of course
DJ Mellow Khris. The idea of regional parties was some of the buzz
running around the set the last couple of days. I think this is a great
idea. It's a matter of
looking over the
calendar and setting dates which don't conflict (or are too close on
the calendar) with other major events. One good thing seems to be coming
out of the poor economy... Apparently the hotel industry as a whole is
suffering (11% decline in occupancy rates in the last 6 months according
to NBC news), so as a result, they are softening their stands on many
aspects such as numbers of rooms to be guaranteed by promoters for
events... So it may be a good time to shop around and revisit current
venue commitments. I'll have more when I get back home.

As many of you may already know I started a new web
site for the benefit of the greater steppers community. It's called
History of Stepping Project. I wish to encourage you to add your
knowledge to the timeline. If you know anything about stepping, please
share this with the public on this site. We are looking for all
information related to stepping from it's beginnings to the present. The
information literally includes everything from clubs and bars which held
steppers sets and parties to contests and the participants and results,
to when different steppers organizations and classes started, who the
instructors were and are; Musical bands, and artists, DJ's, radio and
television personalities, Movies, videos, and photos… literally
everything stepping.
Creating an accurate historic timeline will go a long
way toward helping the community take the next step in its logical
progression as it continues to grow nationwide and will become a
valuable resource for all in the future.
Your input, your knowledge and your effort have made the dance what it
is today. Don't you feel your place (and your organization's) in the
timeline is well deserved? I do!
Please send an email to your members or readers inviting them to
participate. Place a link on your web site also please. All support is
appreciated!
The effort requires more than just posting the
information. The need for fact checkers, people willing to do some
research exists in this important ongoing project. Just a few minutes a
week can make a difference.
