[9/16/2007 SteppersUSA News]By: Markie Bee (During the week before the WLSC SteppersUSA is focusing on Contest's) Yesterday's User Submission brings up some of the age old debates about how steppers contest's are run and how fair they are, I thought I would weigh in on the subject. The first point I would make is even though the Steppers
Community is growing Other much larger dance communities there are literally thousands of dance contest's held in a years time catering to each genre. Many of those use professional dance judges. For the Steppers Contests, I feel the time has come to start using professionals. Many will say these judges aren't steppers so how can they judge Stepping? Think about this, these people are already knowledgeable of the fundamentals of dance. What would happen if these judges were given a "two day seminar" where they would be taught basics, history of the dance, shown videos of the dance (including contest's and how they were judged). To be fair to the burgeoning community, I would still keep perhaps 25% of the judges from the steppers community in the mix and I would split that number at 50% Old Skool/New Skool. Stay in your seat, I'm not even close to done. I want to take a moment to look at another contest which will take place at the same time as this year's WLSC. I'm talking about the Tri-State Connection's contest in Tyson's Corner VA. From their press release: "Experience varies from beginner to professional level dancers. Approximately $20,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded." Last year, over 800 people participated in all of the weekends activities (including the contest). Also noteworthy in this contest website, in the category page you will find this: "Note: Stepping will be matched with steppers only." (Someone must have been reading the debate on Chisteppers.com). Take note of the scoring and judging methods used. It's noteworthy that a "chief judge" is employed to break ties, and the chief judges decision is final. Tomorrow: Part Two |
